There's no reason why a properly configured device cannot do DHCP for your
network. The main 'problem' is correctly configuring the device.
HINT: all members of an Active Directory (including the DC's themselves)
should look _only_ to AD Integrated DNS servers for name resolution. The AD
integrated servers can then use either 'root hints' or 'forwarders' to
satisfy name resolution outside the AD.
and really, even that remark stretches the truth a little. The DNS servers
need to be aware of all aspects of your AD. They need to acccept dynamic
registrations where necessary. They need entries like 'CompanyWeb' for
proper functioning. The easiest way to have correctly configured DNS servers
in an SBS network is to let SBS be primary for the (hopefully nonFQDN) DNS
domain.

Yes I am using the wizards.
Why would it ask you who's DHCP you are going to use than still ignor what
you specify. But it seems like a bigger problem than DHCP since address
can
be modified. and it's DNS and your gateway that take you places.

Well for one with two nic.. it's not getting any DHCP working. You can
still have and inside DHCP and an outside DHCP... but those two nics on
that server means your internal network won't see that external DHCP on
that router.
You are installing this by using the wizards right?

Is it really necessary to have SBS do DHCP. the way my network is setup
I
have the firewall giving out address for not just our office machines
but
also the bench machines (repair and service area for customers) the
firewall
controls who can go out to the internet from the bench and also from the
regular lan. if they don't have an upto date virus scanner it will
prevent
them until they update. plus much more. I would really like to keep them
seperate.
On another NOTE. after re installing I am now getting an error from the
web
site. it looks like it's almost working :) the error i am getting now is
this.
It looks like they give a couple suggestions but im not sure if I can
just
copy and paste what they have there and stick it in the config or what
exactly i should do.
just heading over to the links you sent now.

SBS does the best with it doing the DHCP

Thanks for getting back to me Susan.
here is my setup. I have a Sonicwall TZ170 OS Enhanced. I have a
public IP
address on the optional port which I have my servers PUBLIC card on.
My Lan Card (gig ethernet) is hooked up on the LAN side of my
sonicwall.
DHCP is enabled on the sonicwall and not the server with the proper
scopes
in place. exluding the Server address. all needed ports are forwarded
from
the WAN IP to the PUBLIC address on the server.
Gateway for the public address is the 113. Public is 114.
