Re: IP Address of DNS entry had changed

Yes, its listening on a specific address and that is 192.168.200.103 (SBS
server)

I have set up another DNS service on another server for redundancy purpose.
Should I also add that IP address in the same place as you mentioned? This
redundant DNS server use to be the master copy for name resolution but ever
since SBS was introduce onto the network, its been demoted as the secondary.
There is some name to IP sites set up on the secondary DNS server that I
have manually copy to the DNS server on sbserver box. Two of the sites which
resolve to the pertaining IP addresses are incorrect and hence the red Xs
found on both the DNS servers. I did not set up those sites myself and so I
am assuming the person before me or that those IP addresses are old and
probably changed. No one had complained to me that they can't access those
sites either. There is ONE critical site those users access and hence I
don't want to change anything if they are still able to access it until I
get in touch with the Peoplesoft people in the States. As long the backup
DNS server is up and running, I am good for now.

With all that said, all I want to know is how the second DNS entry of our
ISP got changed. It just makes me wonder what have change that causes that.

now hear this. You have one network adapter.

Yes, the software appears to be correctly loaded for load balancing. It is
probably unnecessary but it looks OK.

The DNS server is probably bound to an IP which existed before you
installed the teaming software.

rt-clk 'My Computer', Manage, expand 'Services and Applications', expand
DNS, rt-clk SBSServer, Properties. On the Interfaces page it will be
listening on either ALL Addresses or a specific address, which please? and
if it's listening on a specific address, is it correct? (192.168.200.103)

That's an unusually high address to be using for the server, we'll
probably also get oyu to run the 'Change Server IP Adress' wizard at some
stage, but leave it for now.

restrict a DNS server to listen only on selected addresses" in the online
Help.

There are tones of red X in the DNS log. All these issue are just a bit
over my head right now since I have just notice now from the time I
deployed the server which was on Easter Day. I will change the Teaming
NICs to Fault Tolerance eventually. I might have to call into the SBS
critical business line to get some help.

Helen, the NIC software could be doing one of two basic things, teaming
to increase throughput OR have redundancy.

As long as the software is properly teaming the NICs we can ignore the
fact there are two. I'd probably be more likely to team for redundancy.

However, I want the full output of 'IPConfig /all' from both the server
and 1 affected workstation.

Concerning incorrect info in the DNS forwarders: Run the CEICW and
delete both forwarders, you will get a warning, just OK it. This should
remove any corrupt entries, then run the CEICW again. These days I give
the CEICW the IP of my router as DNS server, the router then acts as
proxy to my ISP's DNS servers, the router gets this information from the
ADSL login.

OK but how does that relate to the issue of the dns issue I have
mentioned.

There are several good articles on the web today indicating that
companies are way over investing in Gigabit
Load Balancing of NICs in a small business enviroment just doesn't make
a lot of sense.

If you have two nics in teh server you would be better assigning them
IPs in different subnets and have one going for your internet connection
and one for lan connection.
Makes your server much more secure

Pardon my lack of knowledge but I am not getting you Cris. Would you
be able to explain what you mean? I am open to suggestions as well as
input.

I just though if the server came with a dual NIC, I might as well
make use of it.

Thanks

There are 2 NICs. I use a software to make the 2 NICs appear one
one.

Thanks,

Good afternoon!

I found this out by a fluke while I was troubleshooting a
problem from one
of the user I support. When I ran the CEIW within the Server
Management
console, I saw of the 2 DNS entries (they are entries of the
ISP we subscript
to) I have inputted, the second entry was totally off or not
the one I have
entered initially. I hope I am not losing my mind but it
could be.

This is what's showing for example:

Prefer DNS: 199.182.43.5
Alternative DNS: 6.168.101.168
Gateway: 192.168.101.1

The actual alternative dns should be 199.182.43.6

No one administer the server except me and so I have no idea
how that
happens. Can anyone shed on this?

BTW...users are able to send and receive emails fine and the
server is work
fine but I am just wondering how that entry had changed.
Could it be due to
the configuration of reverse lookup on the server?

Thank you!
Helen
