RE: ClientApps

Hello Daren,

Thank you for posting to the SBS Newsgroup.

I understand that you want to know how to install the ActiveSync setup
software from SBS Server to domain client workstations. If I have
misunderstood your concern, please let me know.

Please take your time to read through all my reply and then perform the
steps. Thanks a lot for your co-operation!

To deploy ActiveSync 4.1 from SBS Server, we need to download ActiveSync
4.1 to the ClientApps first and then use the Application Deployment feature
to deploy applications.

To download ActiveSync 4, please browse to the following Web Page:

Download ActiveSync 4.1
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/downloads/activesync41.mspx

After download the ActiveSync 4.1 on SBS Server, we can use the Application
Deployment feature to deploy applications. To do so:

IMPORTANT: By using this method, the application assigned to the client
computers will not be installed automatically. It simply creates a shortcut
on the client desktops, and you must have the users to start the
installation manually by double-clicking the shortcut.

1. To configure permissions for the application shared folder

A. Using Windows Explorer, browse to the folder that contains the
installation files.
B. Right-click the folder and click Sharing and Security. Click "Share this
folder".
C. Click the Security tab, click Add, and then type Domain Users.
D. Click Apply to accept the default permissions assigned.

2. To add the program for deployment to client computers

A. Click Start, and then click Server Management.
B. In the console tree, double-click Client Computers, and then in the
details pane, click Set Up Client Applications.
C. On the Available applications page, click Add. The Application
Information dialog box appears.
D. In the Application Name box, type a name, and then type or browse to the
setup file in \\Servername\<share>.
E. Follow the instructions to complete the wizard.
F. When prompted to assign the new application to client computers, click
Yes. The Assign Applications Wizard appears.
G. Follow the instructions to complete the wizard.

NOTE: The Set Up Client Applications Wizard only works with client
computers running Windows 2000 Professional and Windows XP Professional. If
you have a client computer running a different operating system, you must
connect to the share manually from the client computer, and then install
the application.

3. To deploy the application to the client computer

Have the users log off and then log back on to the client computers. A
shortcut to install the application appears on the desktop. Double-click
the shortcut, and then complete the installation.

NOTE: The wizard should not be considered an installer of applications or a
replacement for functionality provided by Systems Management Server (SMS).
Rather, it is an automated process for adding limited applications to
existing client computers on a network without the use of features such as
Active Directory application publishing. Therefore, I suggest that you use
group policies to assign or publish programs to users or computers in a
domain. Please note that only MSI package can be used in Group Policy, you
should first convert the setup file to an .msi file if it's not an MSI
package. Refer to the following Knowledge Base articles for more details:

Hope this helps. Please take your time to perform the steps. If you have
any further updates, please feel free to let me know. I am looking forward
to your reply!

Best regards,

Brandy Nee

2003 SBS SP1 upgrades the clientapps folder Active Sync install from 3.7
to
3.8 but is there any way to set it to install 4.1 or the current version?

Cheers

Daren
