Hi all,
We are working on SBS 2003, running as a DC on a domain.
All workstations point to the Server as their DNS, which has worked fine
until now, providing internet access to all the PC's on the network.
The server has 2 NIC's, one onto the LAN and one to a broadband router
which
connects to an ADSL modem.
There were power failures at the offices during the last week, and ever
since then nobody has been able to access the internet. They can all still
access the server shared space.
I decided to change all DNS settings to an external DNS (196.43.1.11 in
this
case - JHB, South Africa). This did the trick as all are back online. The
server itself had lost internet access, but this DNS change worked and it
is
once more running fine.
Any ideas on why the server had stopped functioning as a DNS all of a
sudden? Possibly a failed service that has stopped or become corrupt?
Is it better practice to use the server as a DNS, or to point to an
external
DNS address?
Many thanks in advance!
Tibor.
