RE: Exchange SP2 and IMF 1.1

Hi Mark,

Thank you for posting here.

According to your description, I understand that you want to know how to
uninstall IMF v1 after you apply Exchange SP2.

Based on my experience. if IMF v1 is installed, then at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Exchange there will be a value
"ContentFilterVersion". If this value exists in the server's registry and
is set to "0" (to indicate IMF v1), the Exchange Server 2003 SP2 upgrade
will fail and you'll see an error message.
So I suggest you check the value of this registry.

To uninstall Intelligent Message Filter, use Add or Remove Programs in
Control Panel. The account that was used to install Intelligent Message
Filter must also be used to uninstall the filter. No other accounts will
see Intelligent Message Filter in Add or Remove Programs.

Note.Removing Intelligent Message Filter does not remove Active Directory
objects that were created during the first installation of the filter.

If you can't see the IMF in Add or Remove Programs, I suggest you reinstall
the IMF v1, then uninstall it, after that apply Exchange SP2 again.
To do so:
1. Log on the Exchange Server with a user who has the Exchange
Administrator permission on the Organization level.
2. Install IMF v1 again. For your convenience, I listed the link to
download IMF as below:

Exchange Intelligent Message Filter
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=C1B08F7B-8CAF-4147-
B074-8C9C8F277071&displaylang=en

3. After this, please go to Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs to
uninstall IMF v1 using the same account in step 1.
4. Restart SMTP service on your Exchange Server.
5. Then you should be able to install Exchange Server 2003 SP2.

In addition, because of the fact that IMF v2 is not a separate add-on
anymore but is now installed as part of the SP2 setup, to install Exchange
Server 2003 SP2, the following right is needed: Exchange Administrator (or
higher) on the Organization level.

After Exchange 2003 SP2 is installed, we have to actually go and enable the
IMF v2 manually. To enable the IMF, we should go to Properties of Global
Settings and on the Intelligent Message Filtering tab, set IMF action to
something else than the default "No action" setting.

Then, IMF has to be enabled per SMTP virtual server. To accomplish that, we
should browse to the Server object in Exchange System Manager and go to
Protocols -> SMTP and then pull up Properties of the SMTP virtual server
that IMF should be enabled on. Click the Advanced button on the General
tab. After selecting the relevant IP address, click Edit and check the
"Apply Intelligent Message Filter" box.

I hope the information above is helpful.

If you have any further questions or concerns, feel free to let me know.
I'm looking forward to your reply

Best Regards,
