Re: Problem using folder redirection and TweakUI automatic logon

Thanks Mitch and Steve, I used the registry approach rather than the tweakui
auto-logon and so far it appears to be working. I do not really like
putting the password that is readable in the registry but it beats the post
it note on the monitor so they can remember the password,

Best regards,

Tony

Hi Tony,

Thanks for posting here.

From your post, my understanding on this issue is: the Windows logon
process is very fast and its does not connect to the network to load the
desktop icons/start menu items, and you want to know how to perform
automatic logon in Windows XP. If I am off base, please feel free to let
me
know.

Based on my knowledge, please uninstall Tweak UI program from your
workstation and check whether this issue persists. If the issue disappear,
then this issue may caused by Tweak UI program. If the issue still
persists, please try the following suggestions to solve this issue:

Suggestion 1
-------------
Based on my experience, this problem may occur when Windows Explorer
starts
before the logon script completes because of Fast Logon feature of
Windows.
In such an environment, the system may have not received group policies
yet
when users logon to the computer. By default, Windows XP does not wait for
the network to be fully initialized during startup and the logon process.
Existing users are logged on by using cached credentials. This results in
shorter times for the logon process. Group Policy is applied in the
background after the network becomes available.

Let us configure the [Computer Configuration\Administrative
Templates\System\Logon\Always wait for the network at computer startup and
logon] group policy to disable fast logon feature to test:

1. Click Start, and click Run.
2. Type "gpedit.msc" in the text box, and click OK.
3. Locate the [Computer Configuration\Administrative
Templates\System\Logon\Always wait for the network at computer startup and
logon], and select "Enabled", and click OK.
4. Reboot the computer to test this issue again.

Suggestion 2
-------------
The following policy determines whether Windows detect the slow network
connections. It is possible that the connection is detected as slow link
and the group policy is not applied. Let us disable the slow link
detection
to test this issue again.

Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Logon: Do not
detect
slow network connection.

How a Slow Link Is Detected for Processing User Profiles and Group Policy
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=227260

1. On the server, click Start, and click Run. Type "gpedit.msc" in the
text
box, and click OK.
2. In the left pane, click to expand the following items:

[Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Logon]

3. Double-click the "Do not detect slow network connection" setting.
4. Click Enable, and then click OK.
5. Open the Command Window, and run the following command to update the
group policy:

"secedit /refreshpolicy machine_policy" (without the quotation marks), and
then press ENTER.

Suggestion 3: Change the network adapter Media Type

Suggestion 4:
-------------
If you are using the Intel gigabit NDIS5 driver, please configure the
WaitAutoNegComplete registry value to set enough of a delay to allow the
network connection to be running when the operating system attempts to
apply Group Policy.

Location:
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E972-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxx
xxxxx}\y*

*y represents the network adapter instance. If you are using Intel Gigabit
network adapter, please set the WaitAutoNegComplete registry value to 1.

However, I agree with Mitch's suggestion. You can refer to the following
knowledge base article to perform auto-logon in Windows XP:

I hope the above information helps.

Have a good day.

Steven Zhu
