Re: Replacing SBS2003 DC !!!

The Swing IT! kit from Jeff is a compendium of MS knowledge base articles,
some creative thinking, some useful tools, and Jeff's support of the
project.

It has a cost. (due to the AUvsUS $ a significant cost, for me)

This thread starts with a comment about embarking on a 'very big project', a
comment about 'No BDC. :( ' which makes me wonder whether ITDUDE27 is
familiar enough with SBS to know that additional domain controllers are
allowed, and the mention of 26 users in one of the early replies to enquiry.

ITDUDE27, RUN, do not walk, to www.sbsmigration.com. Pay for the kit.

The subject of 'domain migration' into/outof/between various versions of SBS
has been a major focus of several people (G'day Wayne, Jan, self, and those
I'm forgetting about) besides Jeff since the introduction of SBS2000 (about
5 yrs ago). You see, some of use simply don't like 'upgrading' boxes,
inheriting legacy carp. Also, at the time we were replacing their SBS4.5
systems our clients also needed new boxes to run the show.

SO, we had a problem. We knew that SBS limitations effectively blocked us
from processes which 'Enterprise' admins had no problem with. We all,
independantly, started working out how to get around these problems. I call
my solution a 'swing-like migration'.

Jeff went a step further. Jeff developed a product he could reasonably
expect to give to a competent admin to allow them to perform the process. He
documented the whole deal, wrote some fancy .vbs to make certain parts
easier, wrapped it up in a bundle with support of the process, and created a
website. (This in itself should give you an idea of just how Jeff's mind
works, it's a pity he doesn't visit the group as much as he used to, reading
his 37 page 'G'day' always gave me a kick)

Should I wish to take a coherent AD with five (or maybe less) PCs and Users
from one version of SBS to another, or from one hardware set to another, I
will use the Swing IT! method. I will gladly account the cost of the kit
into the project knowing that any other method (even my own) is not as
comprehensive, will result in greater disruption, and does not have access
to a 'resource' which understands AD much better than I (ie. Jeff).

Have I sold you on the idea? (no, I'm not on commission)

Yes he charges a small fee for it but it is well worth it. If you are a
member of a SBS user group in your area and your group "leader" has
applied for it, Jeff will give you a discount from the normal fee. Login
to his website and you'll find a lot of info about swing migration.

for a fee correct?

Jeff gives you very comprehensive step by step instructions and other
documentation and includes some tools to help facilitate the process.

Just to make sure I understand this site or tool (sbsmigration.com),
the
site
is a paid for service to get the migration done?
Are these set of instructions or software tools?

Also you can't demote the current SBS-you must flatten and reinstall
some
other server OS. So another reason why you can't just leave it with
the
current Sharepoint.

Thanks maxibo.

We have 26 users. there's no possible way of leaving Sharepoint on
the
old
box?
that's unfortunate.

Is there any service, I can leave on he old server?

Hi

www.sbsmigration.com is for you...

Sharepoint has to follow to new server as is intergrated into SBS,
What
you
have to watch.... is original installation an OEM version?

Take the load off?, how many users you have ?

Dell installations, WATCH OUT for the default 12gb C partition
this is
way
too small.

Hello all.

I am about to take on a very big project, and I need some help
to
make
sure
I have everything covered or better yet doing the right thing.
Just started this new system admin position with this company
running
SBS-03.
The current configuration is a Dell poweredge 1700, 4Gig of RAM,
2
36GIG
HDD
(NO Raid configured).

As most of you know this is a very mission critical box with
(Exchange,
DC,
DNS, Sharepoint, IIS, Report services, ISA, SQL), No BDC. :(

A poweredge 2850 (Windows2003 + RAID5) was recently purchased
for a
Citrix
project which is not going to be implemented.
The plan/project I have proposed is to replace the current
domain
controller
with 2850 that has RAID option. I want to know if this is the
right
thing
to
do, well I think it is. This server is so critical I want to
make
the
replacement process as smooth as possible, I have been looking
for
articles
that covers migration of the FSMO role, Gloabal catalog, etc.

To light the load on the sbs, I wanted to leave sharepoint on
the
existing
server once it has been demoted, sharepoint is used havilly
there I
would
to
hate to have to reconfigure it from scratch (good practive).
please
advise!
So, I want to make sure i'm doing the right thing! If so, any
advice
or
links, whitepages or tech docs that covers this type of preject
would
be
great.

Thanks in advance.
good night.
