RE: Sharepoint upload question

Hi,

Thanks for your update.

I am sorry for the delayed response due to weekend. Please understand that
the newsgroups are staffed weekdays by Microsoft Support professionals to
answer your systems and applications questions. Your understanding is
greatly appreciated!

If you don't publish the folder link to internet, you can use the method.
This is no security consideration. When we enable web sharing feature to
share folders, the Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDAV) server
is enabled. And we will enable the WebClient service on XP clients to
access WebDav resources over HTTP. The WebClient service enables
Windows-based programs to create, access, and modify Internet-based files
using Win32 APIs.

However there is a known issue with the Web Client service running on XP.
The symptoms as follows:

1. After you type your password at the logon screen, the computer may
appear to stop responding (hang).

2. During the logon process, you see an "Applying Computer Settings"
message for several minutes. However, you can log on the same computer
quickly when the network connection is unplugged.

3. There is a long delay when you try to open a network share.

For more detail information, I suggest that you take a look at the
following information:

You experience a delay when you use your Windows XP computer to log on to a
domain or to connect to a network resource

If you have more than one servers that hold shared resources and you want
to manage them centrally, we can setup DFS to achieve your needs.

Distributed File System (DFS) allows administrators to group shared folders
located on different servers by transparently connecting them to one or
more DFS namespaces. A DFS namespace is a virtual view of shared folders in
an organization. Using the DFS tools, an administrator selects which shared
folders to present in the namespace, designs the hierarchy in which those
folders appear, and determines the names that the shared folders show in
the namespace. When a user views the namespace, the folders appear to
reside on a single, high-capacity hard disk. Users can navigate the folders
in the namespace without needing to know the server names or shared folders
hosting the data.

please feel free to let me know. I am happy to be of further assistance.

The one thing about being very insecure. We are behind a VPN router and
will
not be putting this out on the net. How insecure is this method versus
giving our end users access to the folders via regular folder access?

Hi,

Thanks for using the SBS newsgroup.

From your description, I understand that you have problem to web sharing
some files on companyweb. If I am off base, please don't hesitate to let
me
know.

When we open one folder's Properties page, under Web sharing tab, by
default, it first will show the status that the folder is sharing on
"Default Web site". You can choose the companyweb item in dropdown list
and
then you can see the alias of the folder shared on companyweb. In doing
so,
you enabled webdev to make the folder can be accessed using http. To
share
folder in companyweb, you need also add the path to exclude path in
Sharepoint Central Administration to pass the ISAPI filters. You can do
as
follows:

1. Open the Sharepoint Central Administration site (Start -> Programs ->
Administrative tools -> Sharepoint Central Administration).

2. Under virtual server configuration, please select extend or upgrade
virtual server. and click companyweb under Virtual server list to go to
companyweb VD configuration page.

3. Under virtual server configuration, please select define managed
paths
and enter the name of the folder and choose Excluded path type under add
a
new path.

However the method is very insecure since these folders are saved in
metabase. It will increase your network resources security risk.

From your description, I understand that you want to upload files to
companyweb so that domain users can access them.

To do so you can directly open companyweb site, create document library
as
you needs and then upload the files to the library.

Hope above information helps. Please let me know if you have further
question on the issue. I am happy to be of assistance to you and look
forward to your reply.

I have a folder that I want to give access to. When I right click on
the
folder go to properties and go to web sharing i have the ability to
select
companyweb. I select the share this folder and hit Companyweb and hit
OK.
When i go back into the folder properties it changes it to Default Web
site.
I was wondering if that is ok? and second how do I give users access
to
this
folder and the files in it now?
