Hi Torrey
IMO you should plug that unit in NOW and let it charge while your server is
running. The Batteries usually come with some charge and you are better off
with the better unit in place while you are gone!

Thanks to all of you for th replies! I went to Best Buy earlier tonight,
and bought a 1500 AVR. The older 350 VA was working fine with the other
server just a couple of weeks ago, but as you all know, the old server
only had a max. power supply of 450w. I do not have the 350 VA UPS
connected to the server at all which is why I don't know what the load is.
On the new 1500 AVR, I'll connect it to the server via serial cable. That
means though that I'll have to buy serial adapter because the two I have
already are in use (one connected to our airline ticket printer and the
other to our fax modem).
I'm going to let the battery charge on the new 1500 AVR and then connect
the server to it sometime Tuesday. I'd do it over the weekend, but I
leave tomorrow for L.A. to board the Pride of Hawaii on an inagural sail
for two nights.
I'll post back next mid-week next week, and let all of you know how this
turns out.
Thanks again for all the suggestions!

#1 - Your 350VA UPS can barely run a workstation with a 15" monitor.
You can measure the watt requirements of your hardware, or do what the
rest of the world does...buy bigger. Get a 900VA -1500VA unit. They
will still run on a 15A or 20A 120V circuit (typical for office
environments). Your load may be exceeding the power available on the
battery. Or, your battery may be dead. Most retail stores do not
perform the necessary conditioning during storage. They are praying
that the inventory rotates out before the 2-3 months dead time that
will ruin the battery. Some inventory managers are ignorant of the
problem, and will happily move goods that are a year old (and useless)!
#2 - Your 350VA UPS does not regulate the voltage on the line.
"Normal" power on a 120V circuit can vary from 108V to 130V. Your UPS
will kick in at different levels (see specs on your unit). "AVR" -
automatic voltage regulation will bring the output voltage to 120V at
all times. If you have a particulary sensitive power supply, low
voltage is seen as a brown out or blackout, and may be causing it to
temporarilty shut down.
#3 - Maybe this should be #1: make sure you are plugged into the
battery backup outlets. There may be "surge-only protection" outlets.
The best resolution is to isolate large current draws (printer, fax
machine) on a different circuit. Plus, using the right size UPS.
Plus, using an UPS with AVR. The cost is usually less than the
frustration and downtime of a re-booting server. Doesn't even consider
corrupted data.
Hope this helps.

Alan Leghart
