Re: SBS Backup Problem

Hi Mart,

Thanks for your information. I appreciate your time and efforts to the
issue.

In Application log, we found there are many 8001, 8019 error event logged.
The symptom is similar with KB article 817688, please let me know if you
have applied the hotfix 817688. If not, please first apply the hot fix to
see if it helps. Also I would like to suggest that you apply the whole SBS
2003 SP1 to server box since they provide many updates and hotfixes to
current system. You can get more information about SBS 2003 in my initial
post.

817688 "Error on a Request to Write Data to Media" Error Message When You
Use
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=817688

And also we have found the following information in scheduled task file:
=================================================================
"pingnetcenter.job" (pingnetcenter.bat) 17/05/2006 20:13:59 ** WARNING **
The task was forced to close since its execution time exceeded the
configured maximum.
You may want to go to the Settings page and increase the "Stop the
scheduled task after" time.
"Collect Server Performance Data.job" (mssbsssr.exe)
Started 17/05/2006 20:45:00

=================================================================
This indicates that the ntbackup process was killed forcefully because its
execution time exceeded. Please increase this time on task settings tab to
fix this problem. You may uncheck "Stop the task if it runs for" option or
change it to a bigger value. Then please test to see if it helps.

Since you have 3 good backups in a row, the issue may lies in the NAS hard
disk, please double check if you have configure settings on the hard disk.
You can disable all configurations on the disk to test.

I appreciate your time and cooperation.

Have a nice weekend!

Sincerely,

Jenny Wu

hi Jenny
thanks for your reply. the thing i backup to is a 'netcenter' from
western digital. it is a hard disc with a network card. everybody on
the network can see it. it is located in another building with a good
cat5 link. it goes into sleep mode but i wake it up just before backup
time by pinging and opening a pdf file.
my sbs box is fully uptodate.
the strange thing is that it will backup to it for 5-10 days fine, then
sudenly fail to backup after the estimate time randomly one night. as i
said before i then start the backup manually by clicking 'backup now'.
the backup then usually starts.
cheers mart

Hi,

Thanks for using the SBS newsgroup.

From your description, I understand the issue to be: the SBS backup
runner
failed to backup and received error message "Error: The device reported
an
error on a request to write data tomedia. Error reported: Unknown error.
There may be a hardware or media problem." If I am off base, please
don't
hesitate to let me know.

I. Have you installed SBS 2003 SP1 on the SBS server box? If not, I
would
like to suggest that you install the following hotfix 817688 to see if
it
helps:

817688 "Error on a Request to Write Data to Media" Error Message When
You
Use
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=817688

As this hotfix is included in the Windows Server 2003 SP1, I would like
to
confirm that you have the SBS SP1 package installed. If you have not
installed SBS 2003 SP1, you can go to the following site to get
information
to download and update steps.

Installing Windows SBS 2003 with SP1, "Getting Started" at the Microsoft
Web site (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=51143

II. If the issue even occurs after the SP1 is installed, it could be
caused the Removable Storage service is stopped and then restarted
during
the backup job.

In SBS Server 2003, the Backup tool works with the Removable Storage
service. If you stop the Removable Storage service during a backup job,
you may close a communication handle that links the Backup tool and the
Removable Storage service. If the Backup tool subsequently makes calls
to
the Removable Storage service, these calls may fail. If the calls fail,
the
Backup tool stops the backup job and may generate an error.
Additionally,
the Removable Storage service may mark the media side (partition) as
unrecognizable and label the media name as an integer.

To avoid this issue, do not stop the Removable Storage service during a
backup job.

Additionally, you may also want to return the media that the error
occurred
on to a free media pool. To configure the media to automatically return
to
a free media pool, follow these steps:

1. Right-click "My Computer", and then click "Manage".
2. Expand "Storage"
3. Expand "Removable Storage".
4. Expand "Media Pools".
5. Right-click the media pool that you want, and then click
"Properties".
6. On the "General" tab, click to select the "Return media to Free media
pool" check box.

If the issue persists, please kindly help me collect the following
information to isolate the issue:

1. Please try to backup some files to other drive partition to test,
does
the issue happen? Also please try to backup to the local hard disk to
test,
what is the result?

2. Please try to configure backup task with NtBackup utility to test,
what
is the result?

3. Can you find any related error event logged in Event Viewer? If yes,
please paste the detail error information in the newsgroup.

4. Please reproduced the issue and mail me the following log files:

- The backup log files in the "C:\Documents and Settings\SBS Backup
User\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data"
folder.

- The log files in the "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows Small

Hi,
I know you have tons of mail but could i ask again about my backup
woes. i back up a standard sbs box to a NAS harddisk in another
building. i use std sbs backup rutine. i show the wizard the network
drive and complete the wizard.

all then works fine for usually a week or so then i get a failure and i
receive my failed email. it always fails within the first few mins. the
logs as you know dont really help but here it is:-

i then log on remotely to my server. rename one of the latest backups
as a safegard and run the back up again by using the backup now button.
it usually works ok then, but sometimes on the second try. (you see why
i do the rename as it always deletes the bks file its going to replace)

my theory is.... at 20.00 it finds drive, deletes old backup then
starts estimate. this takes about 7 mins. it then cannot find the drve
again or times out when it looks for it to start the backup.
fix...somthing to hold onto drive to keep live. or a much stronger
search for drive when backup starts sending files after estimate stage.

any ideas? many thanks, martin
