Re: Sharepoint URL error

Hi,

Thanks for posting back. I appreciate your time and efforts to the issue.

Since the issue happens on all document libraries, it is not SBS specific
problem. However I would like to provide more information to trouble shoot
the issue, hope it helps.

From my understanding to your issue, WSS at SBS 2003 will report the "The
URL 'Incoming Faxes/xxx.tif' is invalid..." error. Even these files are
well placed in the document library, they are reported not found.

When we rename the file in Web UI/Explorer view, Sharepoint object model
will process the rename request and then apply the change into the SQL
server Database. This is due to all the documents are stored at the backend
data source.

At the SQL server side, Sharepoint uses the Stored procedure to peroform
the document file update operation. Explorere view essentially uses the
WebDAV(http1.1extension) to perform the document operation; so the store
procedure used for WebUI rename is different from the one for Explorer
view. If the stored procedure reported error return value, the WebUI will
then report the error message. So we should focus on SQL server.

The key stored procedure for WebUI rename is: proc_UpdateDocument which is
installed in the SQL serever at the Sharepoint installation time. Since it
is provided by default, I don't think you have change the logic of this sp.
So my troubleshooting suggestion is please check the SQL server to see
whether any modification has been performed on the WSS site database or to
the SQL server, whether any manually operations are applied to sharepoint
database or any configuration has been configured to the SQL server.

I would like to suggest that you perform the following tests to see if it
helps:

1. Please create one new WSS site at the SBS server, then try to rename the
same file in the new WSS site. This way, we could ensure whether this
problem only happen to this site or to all sites.

2. If only to one site, this means the site's database should contain
error. I'd suggest please backup the sites and then create one new site
with the new content database to restore the site backup.

3. If the issue persists, this should imply the Intranet component is
corrupt. We need to reinstall the Sharepoint services to resolve the issue.
Please strictly follow KB 829114 to perform reinstallation.

I posted this question in SharePoint newsgroup and was asked to post in
server.sbs newsgroup since they only deal with wss (standalone, not SBS
version) and my problem seems to be SBS related.

"... In other words as only Small Business Server users can have this
problem,
you are much bettter posting it to the SBS 2003 newsgroup which is at
microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs "
