Re: Dude - he got a Dell.

Don't blame that totally on Dell. I know that by now they should know that
12GB will be tight but they do offer a choice of partition sizes at least
the last time I ordered from them. And if it was ordered with a bigger c
partition and wasn't delivered give them a call and make them get it right.

Dave and Leythos,

thanks for the responses - I have read the document that Dave linked to
and,
although it'd probably work, I think I'll take the advice of both of you
and
just start again.

It's disappointing that Dell can't get their act together on partitioning
but I suppose it'd be even more disappointing trying to call their tech
support to tell them so!

I guess I should have quoted my client a bit higher on the labour
charges.....

My new SBS Premium box has just over 10 GB on C, and that's with the
user's
shared folders and other data on D, and Exchange data E. So my
personal
advice would be to reinstall to an 18-20 GB C partition. I really
think
that on a 12 GB partition, you're going to be fighting space issues
starting
right out of the box.

Folder redirection should redirect to the users' shares, wherever they
are
(but even without that data, 12 GB is at the very bottom of the
acceptable
range IMO). See:

Moving Data Folders for Windows Small Business Server 2003

It really sucks that Dell has not learned the difference between Server
2003 and SBS 2003. Where 12GB might be fine on a Standard 2003 Server,
SBS is just going to choke and die in default configs.

I've setup several SBS2003 servers on a large RAID-5 array with just a
single partition, and while it's not ideal, it has made growth simple.
