No, i don't think there are two NICs in the SBS server because i
haven't
done anything to it in terms of adding any hardwares. It's still a new
machine that i bought last week. There is only one point where i can
plug in my network card in the server's box.

However, i have a few PCs including this SBS machine connecting to
the same router. It might detect a duplicate name when trying to
connect to the network.

Yes.

And i don't use WINS since i have enabled the
DHCP on that router.

Well, a) that doesn't mean you can't use WINS, b) it doesn't mean that
NetBIOS name conflicts can't occur and c) it's really a lot better to use
your SBS box as a DHCP server. But that's neither here nor there.

So the router is responsible for providing IP
address to computers attached to it.

When receiving this message, there is only two PCs connecting to the
router. The other PCs are not on the network at the time.

I suppose their names could still be remembered. Did you check them all,
connected or no?

This morning, i did another check again because i still can't find other
computers with the same name. So, i turned off all the computers including
the sbs and turned on just the sbs machine. Behold, that message still came
up on the sbs server. Strange

Are you joining all the computers and servers to the domain ? If you create
the computer accounts and use http://servername/connectcomputer to join
them, you'll know for sure that you don't have conflicts, and you'll also
have everything functioning as it should be.

No, not yet. Because this is my first time using the sbs 2003. Before i can
replace the old computer served as a file server at the moment with this sbs
machine, i need to ensure that i know how this sbs server works first. So for
an experience purpose, i just managed to get one laptop of mine to join to
the domain and connected to the sbs and that works fine. They both connected
happily.

Also make sure that you aren't on a hub/switch shared with other
computers/networks....those would all count, too.

This, maybe the cause. Some of the PCs including the sbs server are
connected to the hub due to the limited number of ports on my other router.

But then, i
checked this PC and found that it has a different computer name under
control panel -> system.

For example, the computer name for sbs server is MWH.mwhserver.local
and for the other pc is fileserver.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me here. I'm not
sure why i've been getting this message everytime i started the SBS
server machine. The message said "Duplicate Name exists on the
network". What does it mean?.
I admit that i have another PC used as a fileserver but it's got a
different
computer name and it's in a workgroup, not domain. At the moment,
i've been
testing to connect my laptop to the server before it's officially
used on my
network.

Thank you in advance
