Lost contents of inbox

I have a client running sbs2003 and outlook 2003 on workstations
Late yesterday one user lost the contents of his inbox and it's not in
deleted items
I then found out someone had altered the backup set and the information
store was no longer being backed up.
Is there any hope of retrieving any email?
I thought of going back to the site and setting up the user on another PC to
see if the messages are there in the message store and maybe the local .ost
file is corrupt.
I would be grateful for any help.
