Hi Glum,
You are on your own with choice of hardware. Too many arguments as to what
is best. I personally use High-Rely USB attached drives www.high-rely.com.
I run a single bay unit and rotate 3 drives. I swap Mon, Wed and Fri with 5
backup sets on each. I'll let you figure out what my recovery options are.
;-).
Use the SBS Backup!!! If you do a DR, you won't be sorry. It is a bull
backup.
I also use LogMeIn's new backup solution. It allows me to backup off-site
to my own storage for $83/ year. No data limit since I'm hosting the data.
See www.LogMeInBackup.com for details.

If you think installing patches and security updates is expensive, try not
installing them...

Hi folks!
Seeking advice/wisdom/war stories on the best LOCAL backup hardware and
software to use to back up SBS 2003 standard on Dell server. (See specs
below including configuration of the 2 HDs.)
I am familiar with Tape Backup Units and have used VXA drives and tapes on
other boxes and am wondering if now is the time to switch to a RAID box
eg., the Infrant ReadyNAS NV looks interesting: http://www.infrant.com/,
with 4 hot swappable HDs.
Also, what SOFTWARE should I use to manage the backup? Again, I'm familiar
with Veritas' (now Symantec's) BackUp Exec, but how capable is the backup
applet in SBS 03?
While I'm most concerned about My Docs and Exchange server data files,
will the built-in SBS backup perform full disaster recovery backups, like
I imagine the Veritas product for SBS does?
Btw, once I get LOCAL backup set up, my next question will be for advice
on ONLINE backup services. (I like connected.com's service but it is not
certified to run SBS 03 and Connected - now Iron Mountain's - backup
service for servers is a continuous data backup service, which I DON'T
want, for a number of reasons besides the expense.)
TIA!
Glum
Running SBS 03 Standard, with user folder redirection to the server
Dell PowerEdge SC1420, 1 NIC and single Xeon Processor,
2 80 GB HDs, 1st with a 12GB System partition and 63GB partition and the
other drive (D) with a single partition which holds Exchange store and
users shared folders
Dell Truemobile 2300 router/switch
