AND I dont get any errors in event logs during/related to this problem. Only
error is in backuplog. I get an error using tape only and its only reported
in the backup log. I tried running backup from inside server mgmt and
assesories-system tools.
Same error but happens in 10 mins or 30 mins into backup. No pattern there.

ok i ran the check; 11 writers stable and no errors..
yes i agree the backutility is prolly ok.
These suggested fixes mention errors i dont get. doesnt look like it
applies to me. BTW, I get 2 error messages in app event log about exchange
and oledb not being alighned on 8 bit boundary(perflib). I read i could
ignore these, maybe not now. And a STS_config error about not able to
connect to database in sharepoint.
VSS is running into something it doesnt like but i dont get the errors
listed in the fixes.

Hi,
Thanks for your update.
I think NTBACKUP is ok, because you have backed up your date to the local
hard disk successfully.
Do you check the Event Viewer, any error message about VSS in the
application pool?
Please help me to collect the information for research.
In additional, To diagnose the Volume Shadow Copy service writer problem,
run the vssadmin command immediately after the backup failure:
Click START, and the click Run.
Type vssadmin list writers
What is the result?
