Sure, if the profile was too large and got corrupted, for one thing. You
need to use folder redirection for My Documents (point it at the users'
home directories).

Is it possible to recover such files?

Have you checked your backups? Searched everywhere? Did you perchance have
offline files enabled (I do not recommend this) ?
