Hello;
I have a problem at a client.
They use a client/server CRM packet. DB runs on server. Type of server has
no importance, but it is access based.
Anyways, the server is a Windows SBS 2003 with SP1. Clients run XP Pro SP2.
Firewall is disabled by client group policy. Users have admin rights on
proper pc's. The application writes db entries via odbc on a share that
needs to be mapped on every pc. Users have write/change access on NTFS level
on folders on server and full control on share.
Compare the access privileges (NTFS) for administrators vs users on that folder. Turn up auditing on it too.
Now the strange part:
When we log on as administrator on the pc's, the app works FINE. No
problems, never. When we logon as user, application crashed due to rights
somewhere.
Another strange thing: when I delete the user profile on the pc and make a
new profile, the application works for some moments. Depending on how long.
After a while it just stops working and application crashes again. Then
when u logon as domain admin, program works again. New user profile and app
works again...
Most likely cause is insufficient privileges to the files in the share - Access uses temporary files for locking purposes that are created on demand (by the first user to login to the application), and deleted automatically when appropriate (after last person quits).
If a user is first to start the application, and they don't have the requisite privileges, the locking files cannot be created. But if an administrator is first, the locking files can be created, and then a user who starts the application can use the existing locking files.
