Hello, I have a question about making a manual VPN connection. I recently set up Windows SBS 2003 for my company. I used the add users wizard/(http://computername/connectcomputer.htm) to connect my laptop to the domain. I then was able to take my laptop out in the field and connect through the VPN using the connection manager. I went to another remote site and tried to make a manual connection on another desktop using the Windows XP "create new connection" link in the network connections folder. I typed in the url of my company, the user name and password. Once it was made I went in to the properties of the connection and made sure that I had the checked the "include Windows logon domain" option to specify a domain (should I type proglass.local, just PROGLASS, or the url again in that field?). When I tried to connect, it could resolve the url and then it would never get past the user name and password. So here are my questions:Not to make a VPN connection. It doesn't even have to be a Windows
Does a computer have to be a member of the domain to make a VPN connection? Or can I just use any computer and make a new VPN connection?
machine.
As you have checked the 'domain' option it will try to logon to
the domain, which only domain members can do. You don't need that
for VPN.
If it does have to be a member of the domain, how do I add the computer to the domain with out taking it physically to the company site?
You can indeed add a machine to the domain over VPN. Obviously
the VPN connection is not a domain logon type.
I've done it, but not recently. I honestly can't remember whether
it was a simple change in the network name part or a web-based
utility.
