Now I need a suggestion to stop my side from hurting after reading Gumby's
reply. After consideration of the "trained animal through small hole"
option, I decided there was too much of a security risk having to open a
port because of the possibly of a malicious small trained animal gaining
access through the open hole by either using a brute force entry or spoofing
my trained animal. My friends can't be trusted to enter the office
unsupervised as it might expose me to a sexual harassment suit on Monday
morning from the inappropriate photocopied images that would be placed over
everyone's monitor.
After a quick Yahoo search (I am boycotting Google), I ran across this
product http://www.cpscom.com/gprod/bandaid.htm . It seems to take a simple
automated approach to the problem. Furthermore, I don't see why a similar
feature couldn't be added to the modem firmware. A simple "soft reboot on no
ping response" feature.
I think I saw a device somewhere similar to the phone line solution you
suggested.
Painfully,
Bob

I've gotta assume that if you reckon the router needs a reboot then
RWW/VPN in through the router is probably not possible. IF internet
connection to the SBS is possible you wouldn't be asking the question.
Right?
SO, we start looking at alternate methods of 'getting in' to the office
and doing something.
Trained bird/cat/dog? A trained animal could possibly enter through an
opening small enough to disallow human entry. Perform the task for you.
Someone living close to the office could be asked to visit, push a switch.
Do security guards patrol the building? It may take a few goes but they
may be able to be trained similarly to the animals.
More 'geeky' solutions are available.
There are devices which will sit on your phone line, the other side of
which will connect to power, you call the office, let the phone ring once,
hang up, call again within a certain time and the device will power cycle
equipment attached to it. I haven't seen such a device advertised since
the 80's or 90's but I'm sure they still exist.
I suppose that if you had POTS RRAS Dialin you probably wouldn't be asking
the question.

I was on the road last end and my PocketPC
mysteriously stopped synchronizing with my SBS 2003 server. I have a
business DSL account with CenturyTel which unfortunately requires an
occasional modem reboot. I would appreciate any suggestions from all
readers for a solution for remotely rebooting a DSL modem when there is
no one at the office to do it.
Thanks,
Bob
