Just out of curiosity, what happens if you stop the USB hard drive in
'safely remove hardware', and then remove it?

I'm using a remote connection now, so I can't unplug it, but stopping
the device doesn't make a difference.

Drat, I was hoping that would help. I'm not sure what to tell you, but it
would probably be good if you could get to the physical machine.
