Bertram,
NT4 can be on an SBS 2003 domain, but NOT as a domain controller. Since SBS
installs in Native mode and not Mixed mode, the only domain controllers that
can be on the domain are 2000 or 2003 DCs. You can have NT4 member servers
without any problem.

Perhaps I should have mentioned, the upgrade completed with some
success, in that I was (at one point) able to sync the SBS2003 with the
NT4 BDC.
I've not had any problems with SBS shutting down, it seems quite happy
to exist on the domain with an NT4 server - AFAIK, NT4 and SBS can
operate using a Windows 2000-level domain, it just means some of the
more advance AD features are unavailable until the NT4s have been
upgraded.
