RE: Sharepoint unable to connect to STS_Config

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Hello Bill,

Thank you for posting to the SBS Newsgroup.

I understand that you encounter following two issues on the SBS 2K3 SP1
Server:

a. Cannot access Companyweb;
b. Encounter error 1000 in the Application Log.

If I have misunderstood your issue, please let me know.

===========

First of all, I need to confirm with you if you have strictly followed the
steps in our KB840685:

An event ID 1000 error message is logged to the application event log when
you restart Windows Small Business Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/840685

If the issue persists if you perform all the steps in KB840685, please help
me to gather further information fur detail research:

1. Just to double confirm, when did the issue occur? Did the issue occur
after you installed SBS 2K3 SP1?

2. If the issue occurs after install SBS 2K3 SP1, I need to know:

a. What exact SP1 you have installed? Windows Server 2003 SP1 or Windows
Small Business Server 2003 SP1?
b. Did you encounter any error message during the SP1 installation?
c. Did you follow any Web Documents or instructions to install SP1, please?

3. You mentioned "whenever I restart my server the companyweb becomes
unavailable". I have following questions:

a. Just to double confirm, does this issue occur in LAN, from the Internet
or from the SBS Server Console?
b. Can you access companyweb on the SBS Server Console?
c. Open IE -> Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced -> Uncheck the box
"Show friendly HTTP error messages". Close and open IE again. Reproduce the
issue. Capture a screen shot for the error message and send it to Newsgroup
for accurate research.

4. On the SBS Server, go to Start -> Run, type "osql -E -S
<sbsservername>\sharepoint" (without quotation marks), what is the result?
Can you connect to the instance successfully?

5. Still on the SBS Server, go to Start -> Run, type "Services.msc"
(without quotation marks), and then click OK. Is the Status of the
MSSQL$SHAREPOINT service listed as Started? If no, can you start the
service? If no, what is the exact error message, please?

6. I also need to know the frequency of the error (Event ID 1000) appeared
in the event log. Does it appear only when the server is restarted or
anytime with a fixed interval.

Referenced from the KB 840685, this error message could be ignored if you
could access the companyweb site fine. However, this is only on the
condition that the event is seen when you restart the SBS server. If the
server constantly gives out the error event even when it is in the normal
running status, this may be a different story.

7. Can you access RWW (https://localhost/remote) and OWA
(https://localhost/exchange) on the SBS Server Console?

Please take your time to perform the steps and gather the information for
research. If you have any updates, please feel free to let me know. I am
looking forward to hearing from you!

Best regards,

Brandy Nee

Ever since I installed SBS03 SP1 whenever I restart my server the
companyweb
becomes unavailable. I have read all of the knowledge base articles have
set
SPTimer check the database connection etc but nothing helps. Fortunately
however usually a few hours (1 - 9 hrs varies) after the SBS box has been
rebooted the companyweb starts working again. The following is logged
every
time a user tries to access the companyweb.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Windows SharePoint Services 2.0
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1000
Date: 4/23/2006
Time: 9:30:37 PM
User: N/A
Computer: COFD01
Description:
#50070: Unable to connect to the database STS_Config on COFD01\SharePoint.

Check the database connection information and make sure that the database
server is running.

There is no other information in any of the log files. Any body have any
suggestions
