You read a Email It shows as Read on the other one.
You reply to an Email the email is in the outbox at the other one.
You don't have a PC you OWA or OMA you can see exactly what you've
read and not read.

their own laptop - and they don't use anybody else's.

Right. And frankly at that point e-mail is generally the least of our
worries compared to other data on the machine. In any case, they'd lose
just what hadn't been backed up in the last 1 week, at the most.
