Re: Dynamic DNS and remote email access using POP3 or ES

My domain (both mail and www pages) is being hosted by my ISP. I use the
"dreaded" POP3 connecter you mentioned below to fetch my mail and it works
well even if you have to wait up to 15 mins. I have also used IGetMail
successfully, that was before I installed SBS (which was a clean new instal).
I use "DynDns Updater" to update DynDns.Org with my IP details and have also
set up my router (Netgear DG834) to do the same. This works without a problem.
Currently my MX points to my ISP as I use the Pop3 connector to get the
mail. I will consider changing it & getting a backup in place as you said. At
the moment, because of the connecting problems theoutlying clients are
connecting directly to my ISP via POP3. The stupid thing with this is that we
can all send to the world but not to each other.
Note that not all clients have Win XP. One in particular is still running
Win2000.
All ports have been forwarded by my router to the server (which is running
ISA 2004).
....and ES = Exchange Server.
Thanks for the help so far.

I have set my server up to use dynamic dns successfully and can
send/rec email over my dynamic IP without problem. I can also use OWA
without a problem, it poses the usual question about the certificate
and when one answers "yes" mail can be read and sent. Remote desktop
works a treat.
Since you have Dyndns already, are you hosting your own mail directly via
SMTP (and not using the dreaded POP connector?) You don't need a static IP
to host your own mail. Your AD domain name does not need to match your
Internet domain name, no. Do you have any client software (or a config in
your router) set up to update your dyndns host with the current public IP? I
like DirectUpdate myself. Your domain's primary MX record should point at
your dyndns host - as in, mycompany.dnsalias.com or whatever. I suggest you
have a backup as well - MailHop BackupMX works very well and is inexpensive.
My issue lies with remote email access using either pop3 or ES.
ES = ?
Avoid POP if at all possible, and host your own mail directly on the server
as per the above, and have all clients access it using Outlook or OWA. No
POP or IMAP or anything. Keeps everything nice and simple. RPC over HTTP(s)
works very well for remote WinXP/OL2003 clients.
I
have tried numerous settings to get the pop3 client to work as well
as ES client without success.
Do you have the appropriate ports open/forwarded in your firewall? 110 for
POP - allow, WAN to LAN --->SBS LAN IP.
Should I consider changing to a static IP?
Not necessary.
If I create a vpn session
and connect to ES it works fine (even after I have disconnected the
VPN)... until my router IP changes.
See the comment above via DirectUpdate or similar.
Is this an issue of the security system? My test message goes out
successfully but the incoming server (although it is found) does not
seem to work.
Can anyone point me to a comprehensive set of instructions to make
this work? Does the fact that my local domain ends in ".local"
complicate the matter, and should I have used the same domain name
that I have pointing to DynDns.Org?
Used where? In the server name? Yes. However, see above - don't use POP or
IMAP when you have far better options.
