Re: Enable DHCP on BDC?

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

It's unfortunately a geographical thing whether you'll get great service
from Dell, but you may be very pleasantly surprised at how quickly they fix
a hardware issue. The better of those techs can do a whole motherboard and
raid controller replacement in about 10 minutes. Good luck!

Thanks Dave. Unfortunately this is a hardware issue and technicians from
DELL only visit during office hours so you can see my need to do it during
the day. Eventually I do want this to be permanent but will use a better
piece of hardware when I do so.

Really my recommendation for this is to schedule your down time off
hours. It sounds like your temporary solution may take longer than your
actual project : -)

If you were creating a "permanent" DC as part of your SBS domain, I'd
recommend configuring it as a redundant DNS server as well. This
involves adding DNS, configuring the forwarders, and making changes in
the DHCP scope options to have it as the secondary DNS server. Then make
sure all the workstations get the new DC listed as secondary DNS from the
DHCP server. And test everything thoroughly before you actually need it.

=> By the way, you need to make sure this second DC is configured as a
Global Catalog server if you want it to do authentication. You do this
in its NTDS Properties in AD Sites and Services - it's just a check box.

Thanks Dave. What about DNS? I'm not concern about external internet.
Just have another server on the network that they need to authenticate
and be able to resolve the net bios name.

You shouldn't have any DHCP issues. You can see the lease expirations
in the DHCP console on the SBS, but even if a lease expires I think the
workstation will continue to use the address until it reaches the DHCP
server again.

I'm going to be taking my SBS 2003 server offline for a few hours so
that we can do some hardware repairs. I've configured a desktop as a
Windows 2003 server backup domain controller to be used temporary
while we do maintainence. Should I, or do I need to, configure DHCP
with the same scope and enable it now? Or will the currently assigned
leases be valid for a few hours?
