RE: Exchange Server name & MX records

Hi Ian,

Thanks for using the SBS newsgroup.

From your description, I understand the issue to be: you have configured MX
record pointing to a new ISP, however the Exchange mail server did not
accept. If I am off base, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Since you have changed MX record to point to another ISP, we need re-run
CEICW (Configuration E-mail and Internet Connection wizard -> Connect to
the internet) to re-configure mail server and point email server to
pointing to new ISP. Please follow below steps to perform:

A. Click Start, click Server Management.
B. Click To Do List and then click "Connect to the Internet".
C. Click Next, select "Do not change connection type" and click Next.
E. Select Enable firewall and click Next.
F. Ensure E-mail is selected and Click Next.
G. Go through the steps until the Internet E-mail page shows, select
"Enable Internet e-mail" and click Next.
H. Select either "Use DNS to route e-mail" or "Forward all e-mail to e-mail
server at your ISP". If you select the latter, enter the ISP SMTP server
(please input the new ISP IP address). Click Next.
I. Specify to receive e-mail using one or both of the following methods:

- POP3 Mailboxes
- Exchange

Click Next.

J. Enter your e-mail domain name and click Next. The e-mail domain name
should match the mail exchanger (MX) resource record maintained at your
ISP. This must be a registered Internet domain name.
K. Go through the steps to finish the wizard.

It is greatly recommended that you refer to the he KB 825763 to configure
the network connection and email server:

825763 How to configure Internet access in Windows Small Business Server
2003
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=825763

If you configured the mail server as a smarthost, you need continue
configure as follows:

A. Locate the node: Server Management -> Advanced Management -> Pop3
Connector Manager
B. Click the link "Open Pop3 Connector Manager", click Add button to input
pop3 server information, user account, mailbox type and so on.
C. If the mailbox type is Global Mailbox, you need configure Routing Rule
to route emails to individual mailboxes.

For more information, you can take a look at the following article:
http://www.sbslinks.com/DNS_Smarthost.htm

Then please try to test the issue to see if it is resolved. Also please
check if the Outlook clients can send fax properly.

Hope above information helps! I am happy to be of assistance to you and
look forward to your reply.

Have a nice day!

Sincerely,

Jenny Wu

Hi,

I have over the weekend changed ISP to enable us to receive email directly
to our SBS 2003 Standard box using SMTP instead of the POP connector,
although this went easily enough with us being able to send email without
problems and our domain name resolves fine, for some reason when I try to
point the MX record at our new ISP to point to the exchange mail server it
wont except it. I am trying to point the MX record at
mail.officedomain.com
is this correct.
I have a test setup at home that mirrors the office one, which I'm using
the
same ISP (different domain name) and this configuration works just fine
there.

Did I do something different on the home machine that I have forgot to do
on
the office one? it was a while ago.
Also I have a fax system on the home machine that emails the fax out using
outlook express, this points at mail.homedomain.com for the POP and SMTP
and
works fine. I tried to set an outlook express mail account up on the
offices
machine but kept getting a cannot find server mail.officedomain.com.

Help required please!
