Using a smart host eliminates the need for reverse DNS. See
http://www.sbslinks.com/DNS_Smarthost.htm#How%20to%20check%20for%20proper%20PTR%20records.
When I do a reverse DNS search on my domain, it points to the hostname used
by the ISP, so I'm thinking it may not be all that easy to control reverse
DNS. If that's the case, smart host will work fine.

I tried to send mail through a telnet session to AOL and it wouldn't
let me. Here is the error and what they have listed as a solution. Is
there anything else I can do?
421 DNS:NR

EXPLANATION:
Reverse DNS lookup for your IP address is failing. AOL does require
that all connecting Mail Transfer Agents have established reverse DNS.
