hello there,
im still at a very basic level with windows sbs2003/exchange2003 stuff,
so please bear with me.
im kind of new to sbs2003 and have a small test-setup of a freshly
installed sbs2003 server with exchange2003 sp2 applied. (everything is
in a non-english platform, so if i write some of the names or stuff
here, its not really sure that its really called like that in the
english editions)
i have a (later more clients will be added) windowsxp-sp2 client, with
outlook 2003, latest winupdates/officeupdates applied.
then i have some windows mobile 2003 based pda with active sync.
some problems of understanding first:
i have setup a simple basic domain, lets call it phoenix.
the whole sbs2003 stuff is running on a server
"phoenixsrv01.phoenix.local", domain is phoenix (phoenix.local) on a
private lan. i also added like 3 users to the domain.
the winxp client is added as a meber to the domain, and a domain user is
being used for logging onto the winxp station.
after i start outlook2003 on the winxp client, setup the connection to
the exchange2003 server i see the folder tree.
i also followed the guidlines and added a subfolder (type contacts) in
the public folders to create a company/global-addressbook that can be
accessed and shared by several users in read/write mode.
i created a shortcut to this contacts folder that i created in the
public folders. what i was wondering about is, that the
smallbusinessserver2003 setup assistant actually already created a
subfolder (contact type) that looks like a preconfigured global
addressbook for this situation, only that i cant seem to be using it,
thats why i had to manually create another subfolder. i couldnt
write/add/modify entries into this preconfigured folder (it is called
"contacts of PHOENIX" (dont know exact translation, since this setup is
non-english language), hope you know what i mean)
well anyways, as i said, i have created this addition contacts folder
int the public folder called "company contacts of PHOENIX" and set the
permissions for the three domain users so that they can modify this
global address book. so far so good.
is there a way to use this preconfigured contacts folder that is already
there in the first place, or what went wrong with my installation? i was
wondering why i couldnt actually use that contact list with my domain
so now outlook clients can access this folder that i created myself.
the actual problem is now the need to synchronize a global addressbook
in the exchange public folder with one (or later several) windows
mobile-based pda gizmos. i only want to replicate the global addressbook
(authoritative data) to the pdas with active sync, so that the mobile
users (for example road warriors) all have the latest and up-todate
company/group-addresses and contact data, and everybody has the very
same data.
is this somehow possible? i couldnt really manage this task
all i could do was synchronizing the windows mobile device with the
users local part on the exchange server. so addresses/contacts and all
this stuff wasnt ending up in this public folder contact (global/company
contacts) but in the users contacts subfolder.
is there any better way to do this? how do other companies do this task,
for example lets say you have a sales team or support people, all
needing the very same contact data that you want to distribute to them.
the number of people participating in this will be very small, but the
main task is to have just exactly one addressbook that everybody will be
able to edit/modify/extend and to share that via the exchangeserver and
to be able to synchronize with/through the winxp-clients (for example
their laptops while traveling) and the exchange server (once they have
some kind of online connection to the exchange server... i have already
managed to setup rpc-over-http which works fine)
(if at all, is it also possible to make changes on the pdas contacts
(once they are in syc with the exchange global contact database) and
then modifying or adding entries while under way, and later synching
this back to the exchange?)
do i have some misconceptions about this public folder stuff and global
address books, or do i overestimate the capabilities of activesync with
windowsmobile and sychronisation capabilites with exchange/outlook?
any hints for this problem, any pointers, howtos, faqs or basic intros?
