RE: Automatically install programs

Hello Jason,

Thank you for posting to the SBS Newsgroup.

I understand that you want to know how to install some applications on
domain client workstations. If I have misunderstood your concern, please
let me know.

Based on my research, there are several methods to achieve, please take
your time to read through my reply and then perform the steps:

1. You can use group policies to assign or publish programs to users or
computers in a domain. Refer to the following Knowledge Base article for
more information:

302430 HOW TO: Assign Software to a Specific Group By Using a Group Policy
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/302430/en-us

However, only MSI package can be used in Group Policy, you should first
convert the setup file to an .msi file. You must install a copy of Veritas
Software Console by Seagate Software and start with a clean PC to do that.
For more information please refer to the following article:

257718 HOW TO: Create Third-Party Microsoft Installer Package (MSI)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/257718/en-us

2. In SBS 2003, you can also use the Application Deployment feature to
deploy applications. To do so:

Step I
========================
To configure permissions for the application shared folder

A. Using Windows Explorer, browse to the folder that contains the
installation files.
B. Right-click the folder and click Sharing and Security. Click "Share this
folder".
C. Click the Security tab, click Add, and then type Domain Users.
D. Click Apply to accept the default permissions assigned.

Step II
========================
To add the program for deployment to client computers

A. Click Start, and then click Server Management.
B. In the console tree, double-click Client Computers, and then in the
details pane, click Set Up Client Applications.
C. On the Available applications page, click Add. The Application
Information dialog box appears.
D. In the Application Name box, type a name, and then type or browse to
<\\Servername\<share>\<setup>.exe>.
E. Follow the instructions to complete the wizard.
F. When prompted to assign the new application to client computers, click
Yes. The Assign Applications Wizard appears.
G. Follow the instructions to complete the wizard.

NOTE: The Set Up Client Applications Wizard only works with client
computers running Windows 2000 Professional and Windows XP Professional. If
you have a client computer running a different operating system, you must
connect to the share manually from the client computer. At the client
computer, click Start, click Run, and then type
<\\Servername\<share>\<setup>.exe>.

Step III
========================
To deploy the application to the client computer

Have the users log off and then log back on to the client computers. A
shortcut to install the application appears on the desktop. Double-click
the shortcut, and then complete the installation.

NOTE: The wizard should not be considered an installer of applications or a
replacement for functionality provided by Systems Management Server (SMS).
Rather, it is an automated process for adding limited applications to
existing client computers on a network without the use of features such as
Active Directory application publishing.

Hope this helps! If you have any questions or concern, please feel free to
let me know. I am looking forward to hearing from you!

Best regards,

Brandy Nee

Hi all, running SBS2003 and XP Pro SP2 workstations.

I would like to know how I can assign and automatically install programs
for
client stations.
I can assign an application through the Server Administrator, but all that
does is place an icon in the user's desktop. Some users may not end up
seeing these files if their desktops are cluttered.
So how would I be able to assign an application, and when the user logs on,
have it automatically install.

Thanks.
Jason
