Hi Kathy,
Thanks for using the SBS newsgroup.
From your description, I understand the issue to be: you configured anASP.NET application to use the SMTP service of the SBS server to send
emails, however you received error message "Could not access 'CDO.Message'
object." If I am off base, please don't hesitate to let me know.
Based on my experience, the issue may occur due to anti-virus/Anti-spam
applications or firewall. Please temporarily disable all
anti-virus/Anti-spam applications or firewall to test the issue.
I. If the issue persists, please try to configure Windows firewall to see
if it helps.
1. Locate the node Server Management console -> Advanced Management ->
Group Policy Management -> Forests -> Domains -> yourserverdomain -> Group
policy Objects
2. Click the Default Domain Policy, and then click Edit. The Group Policy
Editor starts.
3. Locate the node: Computer Configuration\Administrative
Templates\Network\Network Connections\Windows Firewall
4. Choose the policy: Windows Firewall: Define Program exceptions and
double click it to open its Properties page. Here please check box of
"Enabled" and then click "Show" button to add the .ASP.net application to
exception list.
And then test to see if the issue be fixed.
II. Please perform a clean boot on the server box to see if it helps.
A Clean Boot will allow us to isolate any device drivers or programs that
are loading at startup that may be causing a conflict with other device
drivers or programs that are installed in your computer.
1) Run MSCONFIG.EXE.
2) In the Services tab, click "Hide All Microsoft Services" and click
"Disable All".
3) In the Startup tab, click "Disable All". Click OK. (This will
temporarily prevent third-party programs from running automatically during
start-up.)
4) Restart the computer and check whether the problem still persists.
If the problem does not occur, it indicates that the problem is related to
one application or service we have disabled. You can use the MSCONFIG tool
again to re-enable the disabled item one by one to find out the culprit.
If the issue persists, please help me collect some information to isolate
the issue.
1. How does the application deliver the e-mails? Does it use its own SMTP
program or deliver the e-mails through a SMTP server? If possible, please
capture a screen-shoot of the mail configuration page of the ASP.NET
application. Send the picture to me at v-yanniw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
2. Have you installed the ISA server? What is the version? Open ISA
Management console, navigate to Access Policy\Protocol Rules. Double-click
'Small Business Internet Access Protocol Rule'. In 'Applies To' tab, select
'Any request' and click 'OK'. Navigate to 'Monitoring'\'Services'. Restart
the firewall service. What's the result?
3. Enable the SMTP service logging. Reproduce the problem and send the logs
to me:
a. Open Exchange System Manager. Navigate to
Servers\ServerName\Protocols\SMTP\Default SMTP virtual server. Right-click
it and choose 'Properties'.
b. In General tab, check 'Enable logging' option. Click 'Properties'
button, enable *ALL* logging options in 'Advanced' tab.
c. Click 'OK' to close the dialog box. Restart the SMTP virtual server.
d. Send e-mail through the accounting program. Wait for 10~20 minutes.
e. Go back to the server. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to
%systemroot%\system32\logfiles\smtpsvc1\ Gather the log file.
f. Send the log file to me at v-yanniw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
Note: Please let me know the exact sender email address, recipient mail
address and time when the issue happens.
I appreciate your time! I am happy to be of assistance to you and look
forward to your reply.
Have a nice day!
Sincerely,
Jenny Wu

I have an ASP.NET application hosted on SBS. When I attempt to send an
from the application, I get this error: "Could not access 'CDO.Message'my
object." This functionality works fine on my XP development system and on
instance of Virtual PC configured with Windows 2000.to
I verified that the SMTP service is running and located the mail folders
under Inetpub. I have tried specifying the SMTP Server value as localhost,
the IP address, the server name, and various other host header names
configured for the web site.
Could this an Exchange configuration issue? We are currently using our ISP
for company mail, so I am not familiar with Exchange at all. I am also new
SBS. So, all guidance is apprecitated. Thanks in advance!
