There should be at least 3 ways to tell :-).
a) the invoice
b) the package (envelope) exterior
c) one of the two pieces of paper in the package (one has key, other has
description)

Thanks Les,
The license pak was handed to me for install, so I'll be certain to
confirm
'which' type in the future.

Correct, sbs does not know what you added (device or user). It only knows
there are more CALs. But you do, because you either purchased Device or
User
CALs.
And, as you might be the person who is responsible for legal compliance -
you simply record the names of the devices or users to assigned the CALs
to
in whatever format, manner, or way you select.

At the risk of muddying the waters of understanding...
I just added an additional 5 licenses this AM to an SBS server 2K3 and
there
was never a time during the process to choose how many 'per device' and
'per
user' licenses to assign.
Am I to understand, then, that the balance is handled on paper only...

@xtra.co.nz says...
Do device cals apply for that specific device or how many current
connections there are.
Both User and Device CALs are for "named entities". There is no such
thing as concurrent licensing with SBS CALs.
The analogy that has worked best to understand CALs is to think of
them
as Post-It notes. Let's say Device CALs are green Post-Its and User
CALs are yellow Post-Its. For each User CAL, write the assigned
user's
name on the Post-It and give it to the user. For each Device CAL,
write
the device's name on it and attach it to the device.
When an authenticated access is made to the SBS server, EITHER the
user
doing the accessing OR the device from which the accessing is being
done
must have a Post-It (CAL). (It's fine if they both do, but that's
usually not cost-effective.)
Where you diverge from the Post-It analogy is that you can't have,
say,
10 User CALs with various people picking them up when they start work
and putting them back in a "pool" when they finish. Each CAL is
assigned to a "named user." If the user retires, is fired, etc., the
CAL can be reassigned, but it does not "float". Same with device
CALs.
They are assigned to a device and stay there until the device is
removed
or replaced.
Say I had 10 people logged in, but have 15 devices, is this possible
or not?
It's certainly possible, but - as Dhow pointed out - we need a little
more information to provide the best approach.
