RE: SMTPS - Exchange

Hi Piotr,

Thanks for your information by mail. I appreciate your time and efforts to
the issue.

I am sorry for the delayed response due to weekend. Please understand that
the newsgroups are staffed weekdays by Microsoft Support professionals to
answer your systems and applications questions. Your understanding is
greatly appreciated!

If the Exchange server is listening on other port (such as 465) rather than
port 25, the external email server will not send emails to your SMTP
domain. In other words, you will not receive emails from internet. Because
when internet mail servers send emails to your SMTP domain, by default,
they try to setup connection in port 25 and however your email server does
not listen on port 25, the connection will not be setup and emails can not
be sent to your email server. So it is not recommended that you change the
email port from 25 to another port.

You can use the SSL on the 25 port to get more security.

To the IMAP4 issue, since the client workstion's OS is a non-English
version. I am sorry for that I do not understand your language and can not
review the error messages and log. I suggest that you contact the local CSS
for support. And different versions may have different issue and solutions
and this newsgroup is for English version support. The reason why we
recommend posting appropriately is you will get the most dedicated pool of
respondents, and other partners who the newsgroups regularly can either
share their knowledge or learn from your interaction with us. Also, this
is to make sure that the responders can better track the problem Thank you
for your understanding.

Please visit our Worldwide sites support page and find support resources
that are provided. You can find your worldwide site here:

Have a nice day!

Hi Jenny,

First of all thanx for your help and your time respodinding to my question.

I made everything according your suggestions, but it still don't work.
Maybe not all, when I try to connect too SMTP default virtual server on
port 25, all function property. Why I try to connect on port 465? I
thought, that it is more safely than on port 25. Maybe I'm in mistake?

The biggest problem is IMAP4. Now I know, that I can connect to SMTP on
port 25 but how I connect safely to my IMAP server?

I send you Print Screens with Exchange configuration and off course OE
logging files, exchange dump and telnet.

Once again, thank you for your help very, very much. Thanks to you, today I
know much more.

Have a nice weekend!

Sincerely,

Piotr Kowalczyk

Hi Piotr,

Thanks for your update.

To IMAP4 issue, please check if you have configured properly on the
default
IMAP4 virtual server. You can refer to the following steps:

1. Open ESM, navigate to the node Administrative Groups -> the first
administrative group -> Servers -> Protocols -> IMAP4 -> Default IMAP4
virtual server.

2. Right click it to open its properties page, under Access tab, click
Authentication button, ensure the option "Require SSL/TLS encryption" is
checked.

3. Run "iisreset" on the SBS server to take effect changes.

Then please test the issue again, what is the result?

To the SMTP issue, let us perform some test to isolate the issue:

1. Please use telnet command to test the port 465, what is the result?
Please copy the output for me for analyze. Please refer to the KB 838049
to
process:

838049 HOWTO: Telnet to Port 25 to Test SMTP Communication
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=838049

2. What is your concern that you create a new virtual server to listen on
port 465? Please try to change back to default 25 port to test, what is
the
result?

3. Please also help me collect exchange dump for analyze. Please run
ExchDump utility on the Exchange server and send me the output.

Hi Piotr,

Thanks for using the SBS newsgroup.

From your description, I understand the issue to be: when you enable
SSL
on
the OE and the SMTP virtual server, you received error code 0x800CCC0F
when
try to connect to the Exchange server.

Based on my research, the issue occurs due to that the SSL for SMTP
virtual
server is not properly configured. I would like to suggest that you
refer
to the steps of the KB article to re-enable SSL.

319267 How to secure Simple Mail Transfer Protocol client message
delivery
in
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=319267

Note: the article also applies to Exchange 2003.

Then please test the issue again, what is the result?

If the issue persists, let us perform the following tests to isolate
the
issue:

1. Please try to logon another LAN workstation to enable SSL in OE
again,
what is the result? Please double check if the issue happen on all
workstations.

2. Please help me capture a screen shot of the error message for
analyze.

3. If the issue persists, please enable the logging on OE client and
reproduce the issue. To enable the logging, you can refer to steps:

a. In Outlook Express, click Tools-> Options.
b. On the Maintenance tab, under Troubleshooting, click to select the
option Mail and the option IMAP.
c. Click Apply, and then click OK.
d. Reproduce the issue and see the files under folder "C:\Program
Files\Outlook Express\<username>\Mail folder\ " file. You can upload
the
files to newsgroup or mail it to me.
