Re: My Doucuments on SBS 2003 server read-only

Hello Gregg,

Thank you for posting to the SBS Newsgroup.

I am sorry for the delayed response due to the weekend. Please understand
that the newsgroups are staffed weekdays by Microsoft Support professionals
to answer your systems and applications questions. Your understanding is
greatly appreciated!

In Windows 2003, the read-only setting on the folder does not show the
actual state of the read-only property on the folder and does not allow you
to modify the read-only property on the folder. In order to view the
attribute setting on a folder, you have to use the attrib command at a
command prompt.

For example, you use the following command to remove "read-only" attribute
on all files and subfolders of a path c:\test

attrib -r c:\test /s

I suggest that you refer to the following article for more related
information:

326549.KB.EN-US You Cannot View or Change the Read-Only or System Attribute
of Folders
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;326549

Fory you additional information:

325361.KB.EN-US HOW TO: Configure Security for Files and Folders on a
Network in Windows
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;324544

Hope it helps! If you have any further questions or concerns on this issue,
please feel free to let me know. I am looking forward to hearing from you!

Best regards,

Brandy Nee

Removing the read-only attribute within Windows Explorer did not get rid
of
it. Dropping to a command prompt and using the attrib command got rid of
the
read-only attribute. Why it would not stay gone with Windows Explorer, I
cannot explain.

Hello!

I manage an SBS 2003 server with users' My Documents folders under their
named folders under the Users Shared Folders. Some of the users have My
Documents folders that show the read-only attribute with a check mark in
a
grey box in their My Documents folder's properties.

I can uncheck the read-only box, but it goes right back to showing it
applied and grey.

My Documents is not being redirected by GPO or anything else. The users
are given the choice to keep them on the server or not (most do).

Why would some have the read-only attribute and not others? How can I
get
rid of it for good? Re-applying permissions does not help.
