Re: Network Bridge on Client Not Possible?

10.0.0.0/255.0.0.0 subnet (Classic class A subnet allocated to private
address space)

Network address 10.0.0.0
Broadcast address 10.255.255.255
allowed hosts 10.0.0.1-1.255.255.254

SBS 4.X actually 'broke the rule' by applying a 24 bit mask to this address
range, but this was at a time when we were moving from old 'classic'
addressing to 'classless addressing', and subnetting is allowed.

Well I'm not suggesting its wrong...just suggesting it is non-standard for
an SBS IP scheme

The IP of the NIC which is being received from DHCP has a XXX.XXX. 0. X
address while the gateway, DNS, and WINS (which one would expect to be
coming from the SBS server, are a XXX.XXX. 1 . XXX address.

And it was late and I overlooked that GPO, guess I didn't have my Beer
Goggles on :-)

There's nothing 'wrong' or non-SBS about the network config. The IP _is_
in
the same subnet as the default gateway.

It's pure GPO.

I haven't played with coLinux.

Actually, there is ;-). There is a group policy that disables ICS,
Internet
Firewall, and Network Bridge.

But in any case Cris is right, your network configuration is not something
from a typical SBS setup - you may run into other issues.

Probably not too many folks here running Linux over XP

There is no group policy by default that would control that.

But I'm wondering if it has anything to do with such an unusal network
configuration.

Normally the Gateway, which would be the SBS NIC connected to the switch
along with the client, is on the same subnet as the IP of the client.

Here's my setup

Dynamic IP from ISP -> integrated modem/router with DDNS -> NIC1 ->
SBS2003 -> NIC2 -> Switch -> Clients

On one of my clients, I am trying to bridge two network connections;
the option is always greyed out.

I am running coLinux with the Debian distro on the client with WinXP
SP2 and I'm using the TAP-Win32 adapter to give coLinux a network
connection. In order to give it the network connection, I need to
bridge it with my current LAN connection that receives internet access
through SBS.

I have the internet access connection as a DHCP client and everything
works great. I have the IP of the TAP set to a static IP that I
reserved for its MAC address in SBS. I have to set it to static
because the Debian distro does not include a DHCP client.

Here is my ipconfig /all results:

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Description . . . . . . . . . . . : NVIDIA nForce Networking
Controller
Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.0.0.11
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.0.0.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 10.1.1.2
DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.1.1.2
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.1.1.2
Primary WINS Server . . . . . . . : 10.1.1.2
Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : Thursday, March 30, 2006

Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : Friday, April 07, 2006

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 2:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : TAP-Win32 Adapter V8
(coLinux)
Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.0.0.40
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.0.0.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 10.1.1.2
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.1.1.2

Any ideas why I cannot bridge these connections?
The status for the TAP connections shows that it is sending packets,
but not receiving any.
Could this be some affect of group policy that I am missing?

Thanks!
