This isn't a full answer, but the first thing I would do is set a
group policy that says that workstations "never go offline." That doesn't
actually solve the problem, but it will prevent someone from continuing to
work while offline. Working offline is one of those silly ideas that sounds
good at first but really makes no sense at all. If a workstation is off the
network, the administrator needs to know right away, and not allowing the
workstation to access network resources at all is the surest way to reach
that goal.
We had one workstation that constantly went offline, and we couldn't
figure it out. We even ran a new cable and replaced the motherboard. The
client finally told us to replace it. We took it back to our office and it
worked fine-- and is still in use to this day. Go figure.

I've got a machine that keeps going "offline" which is very irritating forout
users with shares. We have replaced NIC and even the Network cable. and
of desperation my colleague reinstalled the machine. After this theproblem
was gone for a moment.
Anyone any Idea where to look for specifically?
many thanks
Dennis
