Thank you for posting back!

I understand that you installed Hewlett Packard Deskjet 1120c on the SBS
Server and then the issue occurs.

Based on my research, Hewlett Packard Deskjet 1120c does not list in our
Windows Server Catalog, please see:

So I suggest that you contact the printer vendor to make sure it works
compatible with Windows Server 2003.

Also, in your reply, you mentioned "to install the win98 driver i had to
change a system policy to allow kernel mode drivers". I need to know what
exact "system policy" you have changed. I strongly suggest that you
temporarily change back the "system policy" settings, and uninstall the
Hewlett Packard Deskjet 1120c software to see how it goes.

In the Event Log you have pasted, I found Event ID 55 which relates the
printer issue. This event indicates the installation of kernel-mode printer
drivers is blocked. In Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition the
installation of kernel-mode drivers is blocked by default.

If the issue persists after you perform all the steps above, please check
following settings:

1. On the SBS Server, open Group Policy Management (gpmc.msc).

2. Under your domain, right click on "Default Domain Policy" and select
"Edit".

3. Expand "Computer Configuration" and "Administrative Templates" then
click on "Printers".

4. On the right side check the setting for "Disallow installation of
printers using kernel-mode drivers".

If it is set to anything but "Not configured" right click on it and select
properties. If it is set to Enabled, set to Disabled and apply then set to
"Not Configured" and apply. If it is already set to "Disabled" set it to
"Not
Configured" then apply it.

5. Now from a command prompt type: gpupdate /force

6. Test the issue again.

Hi brandy,
thanks for your reply, i have been through it and gathered as much
information as possible. hopefully it will help you to help me.

as an added note

1. on the SBS server 2003

2. i installed a windows 98 printer driver for a hp deskjet 1120c by
accident and now none of the 4 printers will allow any options to be

shanged

and saved. all the printers print correctly. to install the win98 driver i
had to change a system policy to allow kernel mode drivers.

3. the exact error is "Printer settings could not be saved. The operation
could not be completed."

4. this is every error in the event viewer i think, except for those with
Event Source: W32Time, most are probably irrelevant to this problem, but i
included them all just incase.

5. changes cannot be saved for any setting or printer

6. hewlett packard deskjet 1120c is the printer that started this, but the
errors occurs on all printers and all settings changes

also as a footnote i checked your suggestions and they're all ok or not
relevant.
