Hi Richard,

Thanks for your update by mail.

I. To your DNS problem, I would like to suggest you carefully take look at
the following articles to get more understanding about DNS configuration.
Hope it helps-).

II. If we migrate SBS using the method that is guided by the following
document, we must use different Netbios name and domain name with the
original SBS server box on the new server. it is recommended that you
strictly follow the white paper to migration.

If you need to use the original server and domain name for the SBS 2003
box, you can refer to SBS MVP Jeff's web site http://www.sbsmigration.com/
for Swing method. Also, by this method is not necessary to manually
configure the clients because the new environment will use the original AD

Jenny,

Sorry, should I not be answering you by mail?

re: DNS I'm ok with letting SBS be DNS Server. The question I really would
like some insight on is whether or not there is a problem having two
different name servers associated with the domain?

That is to say that if my registrar is pointing the domain to it's Name
Server, as I have discovered using the whois lookup and I am using my
ISP's
DNS IP's in the CEICW, is that ok?

I have tried to change the registrars DNS pointer to the ISP's name server
and I can't seem to accomplish this, they say I have to own or control it.
So, the only other two options would be to either setup my own name
server,
or change the IP's in CEICW to the registrars DNS IP"s. That is if there
is
a problem with leaving it the way it is. I have only had a few messages
returned by other finicky exchange servers, I'm guessing because they are
setup tightly, to reject spam and are able to sense this disparity. Any
thoughts?

re: The Migration, I know that the domain name must be set during the
first
stages of the SBS setup after the installation of 2003. Of course the the
domain will already be used in the box I'm migrating from, how does that
work?

re: MCE 2005, thanks for the link.

Hi Richard,

Thanks for your update by mail.

To the DNS issue:

Technical speaking, we can setup a device to provide DNS server service
if
the device supports Active Directory, RFC-compliant support for the DNS
dynamic update protocol, Conditional forwarding, Stub zones and so on.
However it is recommended that you setup the SBS server box as the DNS
server and it is more compatible with Windows OS and protocols.

For current situation, you can try to build up another SBS server box and
migrate data to the new server.

Note: after you setup the new server, please ensure the server is setup
successfully first and then apply the SBS 2003 SP1. I would like to
suggest
you setup the SBS server box as the DNS server rather than DSL service.

Please feel free to post back if you need further assistance when fresh
install the SBS server.

To the Windows XP Media Center Edition issue, I suggest that you post the
question in the Windows XP Media Center Edition newsgroup. For your
convenience, I list the link to access the newsgroup.

Hey Jenny,

Sorry for delay.

Well, let's see.

The connectivity issue remains stable so, as far as the first part of
your
message there is nothing to forward to you. As this server is mission
critical, I'm not sure that I want to provoke another episode or apply
further patches. Also, this was my first SBS built and as such I under
estimated disk usage requirements, went with six 80 gig drives mirrored
for
redundancy. So I think now that I have the time to build another box and
migrate, this is what I will do to solve all of my problems. And to that
end if I get into trouble there may I contact you again?

You never commented on my DNS question posed earlier. which was;

"I also have a DNS question that perhaps you could answer for me? Since
we
are hosting this server ourselves and we do not currently have our own
name
server. When I run whois, I see the name servers associated with the
domain
name are the registrars. In the CEICW I have specified the DSL service
providers DNS IP numbers. Does this have any consequence?"

Do you have an opinion here?

Regards the internet Printing, your fix worked, I uninstalled the
component, then re-installed and it's working great.

I'm also building a bunch of MCE 2005 machines and found out the hard way
that they cannot be a member of a domain, is there a MCE server in the
works? I have created a 2003 standard x64 server to handle the DVD
library
and have a few issues there, the MCE 2005 seems to not want to remember
the
user ID and password when connecting the 2003 x64 which I am currently
using in a workgroup mode.
Also, in the MCE 2005 machines, when I add the folders of "My Videos" on
the x64 2003 server, the movies work and play great, but I would like to
use .bmp's created from the cover art of the original DVD cases, is there
a
way to change how the folders appear in MCE 2005?

I'm guessing these last questions are not in your area, if so, could you
answer what you can and link or refer me on those who can?

Thank you for your help, you've been great!

Richard

Hi Richard,

Thanks for your update.

To trouble shoot the internet access issue, we need test to isolate the
issue. Please perform the following test one by one and let me know each
step result.

1. When the issue happens, please restart the DNS server service (in
services.msc console) and then test to see if the server box or
workstation
can access properly.

2. Please try to apply the following hotfix to see if it helps.

DNS clients may not be able to access sites where the CNAME resource
record
for the site has been cached on a Windows Server 2003 DNS server

3. When the issue happens, please try to access one external web site
such
as www.microsoft.com using the IP address not the FQDN on the server box
and one workstation, what is the result?

4. Please save the system and application log files first and then clean
all logs, then wait to the issue is reproduced again and save me the
application and system logs for analyze.

To trouble shoot the Change IP Address tool issue, please re-run the
wizard
and give me the changeiplog.txt file

To the internet printing issue, you can try to re-install the internet
printing component to see if it helps.

Jenny,

Yes both workstation and server appear to be stable now. When they were
unstable, the method I used to reconnect, was to run the CEICW. That
would
work for a while then the server box would lose connectivity randomly,
and
then of course so would the workstations.

Having said that, all the query's you had me run, still do not resolve
the
DNS to the server NIC.

We still cannot connect off site users to print using Internet printing.
I
do want to fix this, however this is not mission critical.

I'm reticent to re-run the "Change Server IP Address" wizard because it
did
not complete correctly last time even though that is what I attribute
the
connection stability to, for fear of going back to random connectivity.
What are your thoughts on this?

I'm guessing that this machine crash after the application of the
service
packs is at the root of my problems and could be a Gordian knot to
untangle. For a final resolution to this problem, now that I have the
luxury of connection stability, im thinking would be to build another
server box and migrate the data into the new box. What are your thoughts
here?

I also have a DNS question that perhaps you could answer for me? Since
we
are hosting this server ourselves and we do not currently have our own

Jenny,

More information for you.

1. This server SBS 2003 functioned correctly prior to applying the SBS
sp-1
patches and exchange sp-2 patch.

2. At the time I applied the SBS 2003 SP-1 patch and after that the
Exchange SP-2 patch I now recall the this Server crashed. After a cold
boot
it came back, but with the symptom of disconnecting itself randomly.
Subsequently I have been trying to fix this problem while working with
you
as this is a deployed mission critical server. So, to that end, I
re-ran
the "Change Server IP wizard" and got a mixed response. The wizard did
not
finish and returned this error message, "error changing SBS nic
address"
see attached screen shot, however the server is staying connected
reliably
now, but still cannot find it's dns server. returns all the same
responses
that I sent you. Also prior to running change server ip wizard, when
the
server was disconnecting itself, when attempting to ping the router it
returned "hardware error"

3. Just prior to applying the aforementioned patches to the wooway SBS
box
I mounted a new SBS box which I configured identically, single server
nic
behind it's own netgear fvx538 on a separate ADSL connection. I patched
it
the same way, however it did not crash. It is working fine, While
working
with you, I duplicated your instructions and it was able to resolve the
dns
query to the server nic.

So, having said this do you still want me to follow these same
Instructions?

Thany for your assistance thus far.

Hi Richard,

Thanks for your information.

I. For you have installed a hardware router in front of the SBS
server,
pleas try to disable EDNS0 to see if it helps.

SBS 2003 supports Extension Mechanisms for DNS (EDNS0) function which
permits the use of larger User Datagram Protocol (UDP) packet sizes.
However, some firewall programs or routers may not permit UDP packets
that
are larger than 512 bytes. As a result, these DNS packets may be
blocked.
Please disable the EDNS0 and then check the internet performance:

a. Insert SBS 2003 CD2, navigate to \Support\Tools\ Double-click
suptools.msi to install the Windows 2003 support tools.

b. At a command prompt, type the following command, and then press
ENTER:

"dnscmd /config /enableednsprobes 0" (without the quotation marks)

The following information appears:

Registry property enableednsprobes successfully reset.
Command completed successfully.

After you run this command, SBS 2003 DNS no longer advertises its
EDNS0
capabilities.
As a result, the SBS 2003 DNS server will not be sent UDP packets that
are
larger than 512 bytes.

Then please test the issue, what is the result?

II. When the issue happens, please try to restart the DNS Server
service
(services.msc) to see if it helps.

If it works, please let me the dns.exe file version under the folder:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\. You can right click the file and choose
Properties
to
open its properties page and under version tab, you will find the file
version. Please paste the version here.

If the issue persists, please help me collect the following
information:

1. When you re-run CEICW wizard, do you re-configure the connection
type,
firewall, DNS server and so on or just choose "Do not change XXX
configuration"?

2. Please help me capture screen shots of the nslookup resolution as
follows:

On the Computer, go to command prompt, type following command:

NSLOOKUP

Please check if the DNS can responds with the IP address of this site.
Then
please input the following URL in command prompt:

www.microsoft.com

Then please take a screen shot of the output.

Please respectively capture a screen shot on the server box and one
workstation when the issue happens and when users can access internet
properly.

3. Please save the system and application log files first and then
clean
all logs, then wait to the issue is reproduced again and save me the
application and system logs for analyze.

I appreciate your time!

Have a nice day!

Hi Richard,

Thanks for your update.

Yes, you are right. For the Router provides DHCP service, the Default
Gateway of the NIC on the server box should be Router's internal IP
address.

And the internal client computer's NIC and NIC of the server box
should
use
the internal DNS Service (the NIC IP of the SBS server) as the DNS
Server.
And there is only the DNS server be configured on client computers.

The option "Enable LMHOSTS lookup" should be checked.

You take a screen shot of the output for me.

To make a screen shot:

A. Press Alt + Pr Scrn to capture a screen shot.
B. From Start, go to Run, enter pbrush in the Open box, and then
click
OK.
C. Use Ctrl + V to paste the screen shot to the canvas.
D. From the File menu, go to Save and save as a JPG file.

Also you can save the output of the DOS as follows:

1. Click button in the left top of the DOS interface, choose Edit ->
Mark,
then mark the content you want to copy.
2. Then please choose Edit -> Copy, in this way, you can paste the
content
to file you want to save.

I appreciate your time!

Have a nice day!

Sincerely,

Jenny Wu

Hi Richard,

Thanks for your update.

I am sorry for the delayed response due to weekend. Please
understand
that
the newsgroups are staffed weekdays by Microsoft Support
professionals
to
answer your systems and applications questions. Your understanding
is
greatly appreciated!

Let us perform the following tests to try to trouble shoot the issue:

1. Please verify the following settings to see if the issue can be
resolved:

I. Please double check DNS and Gateway settings:

1. Leave the Default Gateway of the internal NIC blank of the server
box.
2. Configure the internal client computer's NIC and both NICs of the
server
box to use the internal DNS Service (the internal NIC IP) as the DNS
Server. And there is only the DNS server be configured on client
computers.

II. Please ensure enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP on client computers,
please
check the settings.

1. Right-click My Network Places, and then click Properties.
2. Right-click the external network adapter''s Local Area Connection
icon,
and then click Properties.
3. Click Internet Protocl (TCP/IP), and then click Properties.
4. Click Advanced.
5. Click the WINS tab.
6. Click "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP".
7. Click OK, click OK, and then click OK.

2. Please run command "ipconfig /all" (no quotation marks)
respectively
on
the SBS server box and one client workstation and email them to me.

3. When the issue happens, please use the NSLookup tool to verify
that
DNS
entries are correctly registered in DNS and you can access the
appropriate
DNS records from this workstation. Please paste the output in the
newsgroup
or mail me.

For more information, please refer to the following Knowledge Base
Article:
Using NSlookup.exe
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=200525

4. When the issue happens, please try to ping one external web site
using
IP address from one workstation, what is the result?

Please note: please use the external web site's IP address rather
that
FQDN
to test.

4. Have you installed ISA on the SBS server box? If yes, please help
me
collect ISA info and firewall logs when the issue happens.

Use the ISAinfo utility to collect the ISA configuration information:

a. Download the file from the following URL:
http://www.isatools.org/isainfo/ISAInfo.zip
b. Extract all files to a folder on ISA server
c. Double click Isainfo.js. This will generate 2 files
ISAInfo2004-<computer-name>.log and ISAInfo2004-<computer-name>.xml
in
the
current folder.
d. Please send these files to me at v-yanniw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

4. Gather the ISA Web Proxy and Firewall service logs when
reproducing
the
problem:

Enable the full Web Proxy/firewall logging option:
a. Open ISA 2004 management console.
b. Expand the server node and highlight ''Monitoring''.
c. In the right pane, switch to the ''Logging'' tab, make sure the
''Task
Pane'' is showed there.
d. In the ''Task Pane'', click ''Configure Web Proxy Logging'' under
''Logging Tasks'', and then switch the ''log storage format'' from
''MSDE
database'' (default) to ''File''.
e. Switch to the ''Fields'' tab, and then click ''Select All''.
f. Click OK, and then click ''Apply'' to save changes and update the
configuration.
g. Click ''Configure Firewall Logging''. Do step d~f to enable the
full
logging options for firewall logging.

Prepare to take the trace:
a. Temporarily stop the Firewall service to clear the current
existing
W3C
logs: Monitoring->Services tab, and then right click ''Microsoft
Firewall''
to choose ''Stop''.
b. Go to the log saving directory and clean any existing .W3C logs.
By
default, the logs will be saved to ''C:\Program Files\Microsoft ISA
Server\ISALogs''. (Some MDF may not be able to deleted, that''s
normal.)
c. Go back to the ISA 2004 management console, and then Start the
stopped
''Microsoft Firewall'' service.

Reproduce the problem:
a. Go to the external client computer. Try to access the RWW web
site.
b. Go back to the ISA server. Stop the ''Microsoft Firewall''
service.
Open
Windows Explorer, navigate to the ISA log file folder. Collect the
recent
w3c files. Save them to a zip package as ''isalogs.zip''. Start the
''Microsoft Firewall'' Service.
c. Send the zip packages to me at v-yanniw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Sorry for delay in answer, very busy.

1. The legnth of time it remains connected varies. No error message
presents
itself, we simply can not reach the internt and the internet can
not
reach
us. The Intranet continues to operate correctly.

2. No, we do not have any virus or firewall software installed.
Though
we
are not using NAT or DHCP from the SBS. We are using a single NIC
in
the
box
behind a netgear FVX 530 VPN-Router, all of which worke4d
flawlessly
prior
to
the upgrade.

3. Yes, before the update we used Internet Printing to reach our
print
server from off site. This no longer works. Server asks you select
a
certicicate and there is no certificates to select in the dialog
box
presented. Then we get dumped to a "You are not Authorized to view
this
page"
error HTTP Error 403.6 page.

I will be collecting and sending the requested information as soon
as
I
can.

Thanks for your assistance thus far
