software to hardware raid

I want to upgrade a server from a software raid setup to hardware raid.
This is a Dell poweredge 1500SC running SBS 2000 serving 10 clients,
no SQL. Current configuration is 3x 36gb on a backplane divided into a
mirrored partition for C drive and a data partition in software raid 5.
That is, for dynamic disks numbered 1-3, the C partition is mirrored
across 1 and 2; the D patition is striped across 1, 2, and 3; and a
simple volume "T" takes up the remaining space on 3.

I would like to end up with a mirrored OS partition and a raid 5 data
partition all through hardware raid.

I have 2 perc3/sc (2H794) cards on hand but I don't have documentation.
Can I run 6 physical drives, 2 for the mirror, and 3+1 hot spare for
the data raid 5, all from one 2H794 card? [and does this configuration
sound reasonable?] I'd like to reuse a pair of 36 gb for the OS set,
and then either 4 x 36gb or 4 x 73 gb for the data set. If the single
channel controller can't handle mixed raid levels in the array, can I
just plug in the second controller?

My plan to get from the current state to the final state looks like
this (assuming all 36 gb for now):

1. image "C" and image "D" separately with Acronis TrueImage
2. shutdown and install controller card
3. boot normally, install controller card driver
4. add a blank 36 gb drive to hardware array
5. go to disk management console and create software mirror of "C"
onto hardware array (break current "C" mirror first?)
6. add a second drive to array, break software mirror of C and create
hardware mirror

If I can get this far I'll have 5 disks installed, with the operating
system on a hardware mirror set.
At this point I should be able to format the three original drives and
add them to the hardware array, right? (or to a separate array on a
second controller, if necessary)
If so then I can put the data back in place, either using trueimage or
copying back through the network from a workstation hard drive.

I suppose that to keep this from getting messier than it already is,
the exchange info store and the swap file should be in the default
positions on "C"? They have been moved to other locations as the 8gb C
partition got crowded.

thanks for any thoughts
Joe
