Hi Ilmar,
Thanks for your update. I am glad to know that information is useful to you.
I am sorry for the delayed response due to weekend. Please understand that
the newsgroups are staffed weekdays by Microsoft Support professionals to
answer your systems and applications questions. Your understanding is
greatly appreciated!
Yes, you are right. The Business Contact Manager database cannot be shared
with other users who are on different computers in BCM version 1.0. The
function has been added in BCM version 2.0 and it work well in SBS 2003
environment.
To share BCM database, you can refer to the following steps. For more
detailed information, you may refer to Business Contact Manager Help.
Allow another user to access your database
-------------------------------
As the database owner, you can allow other users to access your database.
The users whom you select can update records, create new records,
synchronize Business Contacts with their mobile device, and move records to
the Deleted Items folder. Additionally, they can access all history items,
including e-mail messages, that are attached to records.
Note: For others to access your database, the computer on which the
database is located must be turned on.
To allow others to access your database, you need to share your database
and also grant the new users access your computer, if they do not already
have access.
1. On the Business Tools menu, click Share Database.
2. In the Share Database wizard, on the Share your the Business Contact
Manager for Outlook Database page, select I still want to share my Business
Contact Manager data with other users.
3. On the Select Users page, in the Users with access to this computer
list, select the check box of the user name to whom you want to grant
access to your database.
4. If the user to whom you want to grant access is not on the Users with
access to this computer list, you can grant them access to your computer.
5. The optional Check computer settings for database access page shows any
settings that need to be changed in order for you to share your database.
(If no settings need to change, the wizard skips this step and proceeds to
the next step.)
Do one of the following:
# Let Business Contact Manager make the changes for you automatically.
# Click Let me review the settings that will be changed to review the
issues for the recommended changes.
6. On the Granting Database Access page, confirm that the list of users is
correct, and then click Finish. If not, click Back to return to previous
pages to make any changes.
2. Verify the connection between the Microsoft Firewall and the BCM
Database.
If BCM detects the presence of the Windows XP SP2 Firewall, two exceptions
are created. One exception is for File and Printer Sharing, and another
exception is for Microsoft Small Business. However, if this process fails,
or there is a third-party or other firewall on the BCM Server, you may
receive the following error message when the BCM Client tries to connect to
the BCM Server:
The Database Server on Computer <Computer_Name> is inaccessible. Confirm
that the remote machine has Business Contact Manager for Outlook installed,
that it is running, and that shared databases are available at that
location. Firewall settings on the remote machine could also be blocking
access. Check with the Administrator of the remote machine.
To resolve this problem, verify that the Microsoft Firewall has been
successfully changed to allow for connections to the BCM Database.
To do this, follow these steps:
(1) Click "Start", click "Run", type "wscui.cpl" (without the quotation
marks) in the Open box, and then click "OK".
(2) Click Windows Firewall.
(3) On the "Exceptions" tab, click to select "Microsoft Small Business",
and then click "Edit".
(4) Verify that port 56183 is listed for TCP. If both the BCM Client and
the BCM Server are on the same TCP/IP network, the default settings for the
exception can be retained. For example, this symptom can occur when both
computers are in a small workgroup.
If the BCM Client and the BCM Server are on different subnets, the scope
must be changed. To verify this, try to change the scope on the Windows
Firewall for the Microsoft Small Business Exception.
(4) On the "Edit a Port" dialog, click "Change Scope", and then change the
scope to "Any Computer". If you perform these steps successfully, the BCM
Client and the BCM Server are on different subnets. Therefore, the user
should back to the initial scope settings, and create a Custom List in
order to restrict the firewall settings and to allow for only the clients
that you want to access the BCM Server.

Hi Jenny
Your mail and the links have clarified the tradeoff in functionality,
thanks. For our small consulting business the BCM solution would provide
adequate functionality.
The issue is that members of the workgroup at remote locations need to
access the BCM database and update it. We are installing SBS 2003 and
thought this would provide such a capability but perusing a number of
threads has left me confused.
I do understand that BCM ver 1.0 specifically did not work with SBS 2003
but that ver. 2.0 is supposed to -- but it's not clear whether "work with
SBS 2003" includes the functionality that we are looking for.
If you can sort this out for us, you would have close to our eternal
gratitude.

Hi,
Thanks for using the SBS newsgroup.
From your description, I understand that you want to know the differencesbetween Business Contact Manager (BCM) and Microsoft CRM. If I am off
please don't hesitate to let me know.solution
There are several key differences between the two programs. Outlook 2003
with Business Contact Manager Update adds additional functionality to
Outlook 2003, and is an easy-to-use, out-of-the-box small business
to help small businesses manage and share customer and prospectm
information. It has been designed to work with technology used most often
by small businesses, including in a PC network without a server
(peer-to-peer network) and with e-mail systems based on the most common
e-mail protocols: POP3, IMAP, or HTML.
Microsoft CRM provides more advanced sales and customer service
capabilities with online and offline access to centralized, server-based
data. Microsoft CRM supports extensive customization and with the
assistance of a partner, can be easily tailored to work the way your
business works.
Outlook 2003 with Business Contact Manager Update is designed for small
businesses with fewer than 25 employees. It can help a small business
entrepreneur, salesperson, or employee who needs to track, manage, and
share, their business contacts, accounts, and sales opportunities. It has
been designed to work with technology used most often by small businesses,
including in a PC network without a server (peer-to-peer network) and with
e-mail systems based on the most common e-mail protocols: POP3, IMAP, or
HTML.
If your business needs require a more powerful customer management
solution, you can import your customer information from Outlook 2003 with
Business Contact Manager Update to Microsoft CRM.

and CRM, you take a look at the following article:
