Re: high cpu utilization with WINS running

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Hi Brandy
I do have SP1 installed. For the moment I am going to follow Russ's advice
and disable the service.
Thanks for your help.
Best regards
Loane

Hello Loane,

Thank you for posting back!

Sorry to keep you waiting but I were sick yesterday. I greatly appreciate
Russ' input!

First of all, I still suggest that you schedule a down time to restart the
server into the Safe Mode. In this case, we will know if there is any
conflict with other device drivers or programs that are installed in your
computer.

You also can reinstall WINS Service and see how it goes. To do so, please
see:

[NOTE]: Please do not apply these steps if you have SBS 2K3 SP1 installed.

We need to backup your WINS Database first:

1. Go to Start -> Administrative Tools -> WINS.
2. In the WINS console, right click your Server.
3. You will see Backup Database.

After we backup the Database, we can reinstall the WINS service. On the
SBS
Server, go to Control Panel, open Add or Remove Programs, click
"Add/Remove
Windows Components", highlight "Networking Services" and click Details,
uncheck WINS to uninstall it and then finish the wizard. After that,
please
repeat the steps to reinstall WINS, and test the issue again.

I also found following KB article for your reference:

185786 Recommended Practices for WINS
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=185786

Please take your time to perform the steps. If you have any updates,
please
feel free to let me know. I am looking forward to hearing from you!

Best regards,

Brandy Nee
