Right. And the other option would be to use Reservations to make sure a
given PC always gets the same IP. If you go into the DHCP scope you'll see
the Reservations option.

You could change it but I don't think it's necessary as when a machine
renews it's address it will always get the same address back unless it's
NIC changed or you reserved the address.

We have a very standard setup SBS 2003 Premium with about 20
workstations (stable number) attached to the network.

We probably turnover about 5 to 8 workstations a year (say, 3 year
average life).

It would be convenient (but hardly critical) if the IP addresses were
totally stable, even for the spare machines that might only come on
the network a few times a year since I tend to remember the IP address of
each machine (sad init!).

Therefore, I was thinking I could perhaps extend the IP address lease
time to, say, 365 days.

Would there be a downside to doing that?

I am guessing that, if we assume we are up to 10.0.0.100 now (we
aren't there yet, but easy reckoning), and there are therefore about
150 left to allocate, it will take us at least 15 years to run out -
let's call it 10 years to be conservative.

If I set the lease expiry to 365 days, then no machine should ever
expire its lease unless it is actually scrapped, and we should never
run out of IPs in the range.

Am I safe doing that?
