Re: Will BES 3.6 Enterprise Edition works on SBS 2003

Hi Lanwench,

I called Blackberry.com today and the result is better than what I've
expected. The cost of buying the tech support is $597 / year plus FREE
upgrade to v.BES 4.1. On top of that, there is no issue in working with SBS
2003 if I were to install it on another W2K box.

Just thought you might be interested to know the results.

Thank you Lanwench. As far as the begging with Blackberry, I don't
think I will go too far. I don't think we have a support agreement
with them.

No - what I'm suggesting is, you *buy* one from Blackberry (and get the
included upgrade).

We purchased the software via a reseller and the reseller
said we have to pay for the upgrade.

Yes, if you did a regular upgrade. However, I personally think it's worth
having BB support anyway.

But I will am going to take
your work and try calling Blackberry anyway to see what they say.

Best o' luck - heed the above.

Hi Lanwench,

I like your answer. Thanks! I did not even think about begging RIM
to give up an upgrade :) I will do that right now.

See where you get. I found it affordable - and the tech support is
really awesome to have, too.

I also like your idea about install BES on another cheapo box and
that is actually the case right now. The BES is install on a W2K Ad
server right now

Cool - so no real reason to change that, then!

and it talks to Exchange 5.5 via a connector. Do
you have any step by step (preferable a link) for me to follow and
configure this server to talk to SBS?

In 3.6, you're usually best off reinstalling it. Since there's
nothing much on this box, I'd probably uninstall BES, disjoin it
from the old domain, rejoin the SBS domain (I'm presuming you have a
new AD domain?), and install the Exchange management tools (and
whatever SP level you're on) and then BES -

Thanks,

helen

Hi guys,

I am working on migrating our 5.5 Exchange server onto a new
infrastructure altogether and this server will get consolidated
onto a SBS 2003 box with all the major network core services. I
am pretty much a newbie with BES installation but not totally put
off by this endeavor. I am just wondering if anyone had gone
thru what I am experiencing and have to find ways to get the BES
3.6 Enterprise Ed to work with SBS 2003 Std. We ONLY got 5 users
on the BES and hence the ease of this installation projects. If
you can give me some pointers, links, idea...I can pretty much go
from there.

Thanks,

Helen

BES isn't officially supported on it, as far as I know. I don't
like to do it. It's not supposed to be on your Exchange box...but
on a member server. You might consider a virtual server for it -
or just get a cheapo workstation, install W2000/2003 server,
Exchange management tools, and BES.

Re upgrading - talk to Blackberry support. I found that if I
bought a maintenance/support agreement from Blackberry, the
upgrade to 4.0 was included at no extra charge - and 4.0 is WAY
better. No cradles, ever!
