RE: MMC & Admin Tools SBS 2003

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Hi,

Thanks for using the SBS newsgroup.

From your description, I understand the issue to be: the MMC and admin
tools can not start properly. If I am off base, please don't hesitate to
let me know.

Let us perform the following steps to try to trouble shoot the issue:

1. Please try to start the server under Safe Mode to test the issue. you
can refer to the following steps:

1) Restart the computer.
2) Keep pressing F8 key until the Windows Startup menu appears.
3) Choose the Safe Mode, and press Enter.
4) Please test the issue and let me know the result.

*Note: Some third party applications and hardware devices cannot be used
during Safe Mode. You will temporarily be unable to connect to the Internet
while in Safe Mode.

2. If the issue persists, please check the permissions of the C:\ partition
(if you installed the SBS OS on another partition, you need check the
permissions of the partition).

1) Right click the OS installation partition to open its properties page.
2) Under Security tab, please ensure Administrators and SYSTEM has Full
Control permissions.
3) Please give Everyone Full Control permissions to test the issue, what is
the result.

Note: you need not give Everyone Full Control permissions, you can give
Full Control or Write permission to those who need to access the C: drive
to test the issue.

3. If the issue persists, please check if the MSXML3.dll was unregistered.
To resolve this issue, reregister the Msxml3.dll file. To do this, follow
these steps:

1) Click Start, click Run, type CMD in the Open box, and then click OK.
2) Type the following command at the command prompt, where C:\Windows is
the folder that Windows is installed in, and then press ENTER:

regsvr32 C:\Windows\system32\msxml3.dll
When the command completes successfully, you receive the following message:

DllRegisterServer in C:\Windows\system32\msxml3.dll succeeded.

And then please test the issue again, what is the result?

4. If the issue still persists, please help me collect some information to
isolate the issue:

1). What is the version of the SBS? Is it SBS 2003, SBS 2003 SP1, SBS 2000
or SBS 2000 SP1?

2). When does the issue begin to happen? Have you changed any settings or
installed any applications before the issue began to happen?

3). Please export system and application logs of the SBS server box and
email them to me. My working mailbox is: v-yanniw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

4). If the SBS version is SBS 2003 server box, I also would like to suggest
that you apply SBS 2003 SP1 to see if it helps. The SBS 2003 sp1 can fix
some corrupt files issues but also includes many hotfixes and updates to
avoid any potential issues.

It is recommended that you take a look at the following link:

Windows Small Business Server 2003 Service Pack 1
http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsServer2003/sbs/downloads/sp1/default.mspx

Hope above information helps! I am happy to be of assistance to you and
look forward to your reply.

Have a nice day!

Sincerely,

Jenny Wu
