before you do this, make sure VMWare is not being used. It is a program
which is used to emulate hardware, creating what is known as a 'virtual
machine'.
eg. I use it on my network for software testing. VMWare workstation, running
on my XP, allows me to create virtual machines into which other operating
systems (SBS, Windows Server, Linux, just about any x86 OS) are installed. I
recently threw together a Windows Server 2003 box so that I could have a
look at VMWare Server, which is now a free download from VMWare.
It has no place running on the SBS. VMWare should be removed.
Theoretically, a hefty system could cope with the additional load of running
such software. If you were to google this group for
supergumby+VMWare+Virtual+Server you would even see that I have theorised
about using such environments for production server(s) (Virtual PC/ Virtual
Server are MS 'equivalents'). I even run Virtual Server on my LoungeAN SBS.
You've mentioned one aspect of VMWare which causes me to say it should be
removed, the VMWare network emulations. The SBS wizards correctly handle
only single and dual NIC configurations. To SBS it appears your system has 4
NICs. Theoretically you could just uninstall the VMWare adapters, they are
only used in certain scenarios and it is doubtful that these scenarios apply
in your circumstances.
NOTE: I'm not saying that such virtualisation environments are 'bad', it's
more that SBS is not a good platform on which to run them. HECK, gimme a
Quad Xeon with 8GB RAM and a fast SCSI RAID subsystem running Windows Server
Enterprise Edition and I'll move your SBS into a virtual environment, then
run up a Terminal Server alongside it, and another VM as my LOB SQL server,
then I'll run XP in another VM 'full screen' so I can sit at the box and
make it really hummmmmmmmm.

one NIC connected to a t1 router. There is also some software called
VmWare
that apparently creates virtual machines. i've just recently inherited
management of this system so I don't know what that is, but the 2 virtual
NICS show up in the Network Connections control panel.

Do you have a router? If not, do you have two NICs on the server and

i can't establish a VPN connection to my SBS 2003 server. i get the
721
error. I get that this is a port issue and i found a microsoft article
that
says...
"CAUSE
This issue may occur if the network firewall does not permit Generic
Routing
Encapsulation (GRE) protocol traffic. GRE is IP Protocol 47. PPTP uses
GRE
for tunneled data.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, configure the network firewall to permit GRE
protocol
47. Also, make sure that the network firewall permits TCP traffic on
port
1723. Both of these conditions must be met to establish VPN
connectivity by
using PPTP."
My question is, how do i access the SBS firewall settings directly
without
re-running the Internet and E-mail wizard? Can't I access the Firewall
settings directly?
.
