RE: word reports an error when trying to print

Crina,
(I'm the former 'skywave' :-) )
I have made a fresh installation of 2003SBSpremium and WINXPpro on the
clients..
Again - when it comes to the printer setup - I get into problems..
I install the printer on the server (network IP) - and then I share it..
On the clients - I can make a 'print test page' OK..
But if I open a Word doc - and try to print this one - then comes this MS
Word Print error screen - asking me to send a report or not - and to save my
doc..
If I elect to install the full printer on the client PC - I have no prob
printing..
Actually I suspect the prob to be a PORT problem..
Reason being that when I install the printer on a client - one of the first
things is that it warns me that some ports are closed by Windows Firewall -
and asks me if I wnat to open these in order to proceed..
So - how can I still avoid installing the printer on each and every client -
and instead open these ports..?
And how do I find out which ports - and how to open them..?

Hi Skywave,.
Thanks for your reply.
I am sorry for the delayed response due to weekend. Please understand that
the newsgroups are staffed weekdays by Microsoft Support professionals to
answer your systems and applications questions. Your understanding is
greatly appreciated!
I suggest you perform the following steps to re-share the printer on SBS:
1. Delete the printer from all clients.
2. Delete the printer from the server.
3. Reinstall the printer on the server and install the latest driver for
the server.
4. Share the printer and install the additional printer drivers for all
types of workstations.
You can download all the latest drivers for this printer from the following
HP web page:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?pnameOID
=21860&locale=en_US&taskId=135&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=27901&submit.y=
6&submit.x=12&cc=us
For more information regarding how to share a printer and install
additional drivers for the clients, please refer to the following Microsoft
Knowledge Base article:
300392 HOW TO: Install and Configure a File and Print Server in Windows 2000
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=300392
5. Let the clients browse the shares of the SBS server (\\SBSServer) and
double click on the shared printer to install it on the clients.
6. Test the issue again.
I am appreciated your time and look forward to hearing from you.
Best regards,
Crina Li (MSFT)

| hi jenny,
| pleased to meet you - i'm sure crina enjoys her time off :-)

| responding to your no 3 question:
| before i re-formatted my hard drive and re-installed the sbs2003 premium
- i
| could use the shared printer on the sbs from any client without
installing
| the printerdriver on the clients..
| now - after re-installing the sbs - i can not use the shared printer on
the
| sbs from the clients..
|
| but - after installing the printer driver on all clients - they are now
able
| to fully use the printer directly - via fixed ip address on my lan.. i
have
| not setup the sbs to share the printer now - it uses the printer on its
own -
| like the clients..
|
| but i would have thought that i should be able to only install the
| printerdriver on the sbs - and then share it to all clients - without
having
| to install the driver on all clients..
