Re: A few questions about SBS

Hi Nathaniel

Be careful with Device CALs. My Church has a lot of people using RWW to work
from home. Each remote computer including Starbucks sites requires a Device
CAL when connected. If you don't have a lot of "Shift" workers User CALs are
generally better.

I do understand your point, and agree. Right now this will be our first
server and we will not be creating any file shares. But once we are using
file sharing I will take your suggestion and Use a win2k3 box in a DMZ for
our website. If I set the server up with device CALs and people access
e-mail from the web or shared workstations does the web piece and each
workstation use one device license or does each connection for the web use
a device license? If the first is the case would I be able to have more
that five mailboxes as long as they had a device that had a CAL to connect?
Also am I right that the licensees are dynamic? I may have 10 devices and 5
devices CAL but as long as only 5 devices are connected at a time I will be
ok? Thanks for all your help sorting this out. Being we are a church/school
we don't have extra money to cover planning mistakes.

Yes, you can have additional member servers acting as files server in the
SBS domain.

SBS comes with 5 licenses (CALs) that can be designated as either all
Device CALs, all User cals or a combination of the two.

Exchange licenses... The SBS CALs allows access to the Exchange server
running onthe SBS server, so you won't need to buy any "Exchange" CALs.
In addition, the SBS CALs cover access to any additional Win2K or Win2K3
servers in the domain. This means that you will not need to purchase any
Win2K3 server CALs (just a Win2K3 Standard server license). However, teh
Win2K3 server itself does consume an SBS 2003 CAL.

How to configure licensing on an additional Windows server in an SBS
network
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;327644

While SBS can be used to host web sites, it's generally not a preferred
configuration from a security and server-load standpoint (all SBS
components - Exchange, ISA, User folders, etc. must remain on the SBS
server itself). I would think it may be better to run the web sites on
the Win2K3 server and put then this web server in a DMZ outside the SBS
network. Of course that means standard licensing for the Win2K3 web
server since it would be outside the SBS 2003 domain. Maybe someone else
more knowledgeable could jump in on this one.

I just want to make sure I understand. I could add a Win2k3 server to the
domain as a member server and use it for a file server? Basically what I
am looking to do is have the SBS server be for hosting our 3 web sites
and e-mail and ISA. Then I would like to have a separate file server for
our school. Would that be possible? Is there any limitations on Exchange
that comes with SBS and do I but normal exchange licenses for it? One
last question how many exchange licenses come with SBS?

Thanks,
Nathaniel

1. Does SBS use AD?
Yes.

2. Can I have more than one SBS server in a domain?
No. But you can have additional Win2K or Win2K3 domain controllers if
you feel you need them (extra DCs don't buy you much, member servers
may be more appropriate ).

3. If you can have more than one can you have 75 users/connections per
server?
N/A

4. Is exchange limited to 75 mail boxes
No. You can create as many individual mailboxes as you need but access
to them consumes a CAL (either a Device CAL or a User CAL.)

The church may be able to get Microsoft Charity pricing for SBS
software and CALs (last I checked this was about 50-70% off the retail
price of the software). Same may apply for Windows desktop operations
systems (e.g., WinXP Pro).

I have always used novell but need to setup a server for a
church/school and SBS looks like a good option, but I have a few
question.

1. Does SBS use AD?
2. Can I have more than one SBS server in a domain?
3. If you can have more than one can you have 75 users/connections per
server?
4. Is exchange limited to 75 mail boxes.

Thanks,
Nathaniel
