Re: Domain & Workgroup Access on XP Pro SP2

When SBS is properly setup as the DHCP server the workstations will
automatically receive the IP address of the server for their DNS.

I have a similar issue -- can you please clarify some Microsoft
instructions
that seems to be in conflict?

In the SBS documentation, Client configuration (pg 107), instructions say
"TCP/IP is configured to automatically obtain an IP address and DNS server
addresses."

Yet many replies on this board say to be sure the DNS server configured on
the client PC is the IP address of the SBS server. Which is the correct
way
to configure the client?

Hi Tom,

Thanks for using the SBS newsgroup!

From your description, I am not sure what you want. Could you describe
your
situation more detail? Do you mean that you want to configure the laptop
not only can login to domain at work, but also can work with the
workgroup
at home? If yes, you can join the laptop to domain at work, and when you
bring the laptop to home, you can choose logon locally and use the
workgroup resources with appropriate permissions.

The method to join domain:
========================
If the company network is SBS environment, we recommended you join the
computer to domain with setup client computer wizard. You can refer to
the
following steps to do:

I. Please verify the laptop settings as below:

a. Leave the Default Gateway of the internal NIC blank of the server box.
b. Configure the internal client computer's NIC use the internal DNS
Service (the internal NIC IP) as the DNS Server. And there is only the
DNS
server be configured on client computers.

c. Please ensure enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP on client computers, please
check the settings.

1. Right-click My Network Places, and then click Properties.
2. Right-click the external network adapter''s Local Area Connection
icon,
and then click Properties.
3. Click Internet Protocl (TCP/IP), and then click Properties.
4. Click Advanced.
5. Click the WINS tab.
6. Click "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP".
7. Click OK, click OK, and then click OK.

II. Setup the client computer by running Setup Client Computer wizard to
setup computer account.

III. In the client computer, try to join it to domain by running
http://servername/connectcomputer. And assign appropriate user accounts
to
the computer.

Note: Please ensure you have added the SBS Site (http://FQDN/*) in
trusted
site in IE of the laptop. You can refer to the following steps:

a. Start Internet Explorer.
b. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
c. On the Security tab, click Local intranet zone, and then click Sites.
d. Click Advanced.
e. In the Add this Web site to the zone box, type the ConnectComputer
server's IP address or the ConnectComputer server's FQDN, and then click
Add.

========================
If the network is normal Windows 2003 domain, you can manually join the
laptop to domain. The steps as below:

After you verified DNS, Gateway settings, and then logon the laptop with
Administrator account, and then manually join it to domain.
1. Right click My Computer and open System Properties page.
2. Under Computer Name tab, click Change.. button to open Change computer
name page. Please check the checkbox of "Domain" and input appropriate
domain name the laptop need to join.
3. When you click OK, there will be a windows form prompt to require
inputting the domain admin user name and password. After authenticated,
the
laptop will be joined to domain.

If the laptop is brought to home, you just need configure appropriate IP
address as your home network, it will work fine.

Hope above information helps! If you have any further question on the
issue
please let me know. I am happy to be assistance to your and look forward
to
your reply!

Have a nice day!

Sincerely,

I am currently a domain admin and have never had a need to have a
computer on a domain at work, and a workgroup at home.

Now have a new laptop, which I need just this.

Any easy way to create a XP Pro login for domain, and one for
workgroup?

Thanks in advance!
