Re: Error during the setup of SBS 2003

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Not sure why you chose to use D:, but Windows Server Update Service
currently requires C: \

I'd hazard this install will have other issues later.

The answer is no to both of those questions. We were able to get passed
the
SBS install and everything seems to be running ok now. I plan on
installing
SP1 very soon. Though I would like to ask if there could possibly be any
future mishaps with Windows booting off the 'D' partition instead of 'C'?
Also is it seems Windows didn't like when I changed the registry setting
for
"program files" from the default directory. Just curious if this might
have
been a bad move to put the boot on 'd'.

Or did you add any security patches or 3rd party apps to the base Win2K3
install before attempting the SBS component install?

This is a Dell PowerEdge 1850 rackmount machine. After setting up the
operating system and logging into Windows, I tried installing the SBS
portion
of Windows Server 2003. After selecting which components of SBS I want
to
install and clicking 'Next', it gives me the message "A problem has
been
encountered while loading the setup components. Cancelling setup"

This is a clean Windows Server install. The boot drive was changed to
drive
D during partitioning of the hard drive, so the OS files are on 'D'
instead
of 'C' (which is going to be used as the data drive.) Also the
registry
was
edited to point program files to 'C' so that new programs would
automatically
install there. I don't see how this could cause a problem but I just
want
to
give as much information as possible.

Update:
I changed the registry key
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion"
ProgramFilesDir to point back to 'D' as it was originally. I was able
to
get
past the point where it would have normally given me the error message
but
during the installation phase it doesn't complete, it just cuts out
halfway
through with no message given. I appreciate any help on this matter.
