RE: Company intranet--cannot connect

Tech-Archive recommends: Speed Up your PC by fixing your registry

Hi Brandy,
Here are my answers to your questions:

1. Here's the error message.

The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be
experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser
settings.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please try the following:

Click the Refresh button, or try again later.

If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make sure that it is
spelled correctly.

To check your connection settings, click the Tools menu, and then click
Internet Options. On the Connections tab, click Settings. The settings should
match those provided by your local area network (LAN) administrator or
Internet service provider (ISP).
See if your Internet connection settings are being detected. You can set
Microsoft Windows to examine your network and automatically discover network
connection settings (if your network administrator has enabled this setting).
Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options.
On the Connections tab, click LAN Settings.
Select Automatically detect settings, and then click OK.
Some sites require 128-bit connection security. Click the Help menu and then
click About Internet Explorer to determine what strength security you have
installed.
If you are trying to reach a secure site, make sure your Security settings
can support it. Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the
Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section and check settings for SSL 2.0,
SSL 3.0, TLS 1.0, PCT 1.0.
Click the Back button to try another link.

Cannot find server or DNS Error
Internet Explorer

2. The problem occurs on the LAN. Through the remote web workplace, the
intranet comes up fine.

3. Only certain computers. The user logged onto a different computer and
the intranet worked fine.

4. Through the remote SBS workspace, the the intranet connects fine.

5. Yes, it's http://companyweb.

6. No, we don't have ISA installed.

7. We tried those settings, but it didn't help.

Thanks for your help!

Hello Jim,

Thank you for posting to the SBS Newsgroup.

I understand that one of your clients cannot access the Intranet. If I have
misunderstood your concern, please let me know.

In order to supplement your description, I need your help to gather the
following information:

1. When the problematic client fails to access Intranet, does he/she
encounter any error message? Please open IE -> Tools -> Internet Options ->
Advanced -> Uncheck the box "Show friendly HTTP error messages". Close IE
and open IE again. Reproduce the issue. Type the error message word by word
to the Newsgroup.

2. Does this issue occur in LAN or from the Internet? Can this problematic
client access Intranet in LAN?

3. Does this issue occur to any computer or certain computers? You can ask
the problematic client to log in another computer, can he/she access the
Intranet? In this case, we can isolate whether this is computer issue or
user account issue.

4. Just to double confirm, you mentioned "the client connects from home
using a VPN, he can get to the intranet page just fine", can this
problematic client access Intranet directly from home?

5. Just to double confirm, what is the exact Intranet? Do you mean
http://companyweb?

6. Do you have ISA Server installed? If yes, is it ISA 2K or ISA 2K4?

7. For your information:

On the problematic computer, double-click Internet Options in Control
Panel. On the Security tab, select the "Local intranet" zone and click
Sites. Ensure http://companyweb is listed in the "Web sites" list. Click
Close and then click Custom Level, scroll down to the bottom of the
Settings list, under User Authentication\Logon, ensure either "Automatic
logon only in Intranet zone" is selected. Test again and see how it goes.

Please take your time to perform the steps and gather the information for
research. I am looking forward to hearing from you!

Best regards,

Brandy Nee

One of my clients cannot connect to the sbs company intranet. This was
working fine until recently, and it works fine for everyone else.

Funny thing is, when the client connects from home using a VPN, he can get
to the intranet page just fine.
